Pacific Shoreline Marathon

Sunny
Total Time = 2h 20m 17s
Overall Rank = 4423/7386
Age Group = F 30-34
Age Group Rank = 343/702
Pre-race routine:

4:45 am Ate oatmeal at my house, drove to event drinking coffee on the way there. Parked and took the shuttle bus to the start line. Walked around, went to the bathroom, looked for water (forgot it-eek), hung out with tim. Did an easy 4 min jog to warm up, went to the bathroom, stretched, took off sweats and herded up to get to the wave starts.
Event warmup:

4 min jog, stretched, and had a gu about 15 min before race.
Run
  • 2h 20m 17s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

There were way too many walkers up front. It was hard to navigate out of the start and settle into a pace. Way too many people wearing headphones, it made it tough because the course was crowded the entire time. Also, the last long races that I participated in were bay to breakers and triathlons; they were much more social.
What would you do differently?:

Bring disposable water bottle to the start. Try non-gu for running. Jelly beans or shot blocks might be interesting. Small not so messy and easy to digest.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked, stretched, looked for bananas and could only find apples (the bananas were for the marathoners -ooh), drank tons of water, took off shoes and walked to ocean, soaked feet, walked, stretched, walked stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Unfamiliar with running 13.1 miles. I am sure I can go a little faster next time.

Event comments:

Volunteers were great! Race was fun and full of energy. Parking shuttle worked very nicely. I would do it again.
Maybe I will do the full marathon so I can get a banana at the end!

according to the official results: Age Rank = 46.6% 0 - 5.2 mi pace - 10:19 5.2 - 9.4mi pace - 10:26 my splits on my watch are: 1 - 10:18 -flat/downhill 2 - 9:00 3 - 11:18 4 - 10:18 5 - 10:35 - gu 6 - 10:43 - uphill 7 - 10:38 8 - 10:56 9 - 11:14 10 - 10:59 11 - 13:23 - gu 12 - 9:02 - flat/downhill 13.1 - 11:39
Course: Relatively flat course, the majority of the middle was uphill but nothing like the hills I have been training on. There were plenty of pora-pots along the course, although I didn't need to stop. Great views of the ocean and neighborhoods of Huntington beach. Bands and crowd were great. Kids even lined up for a high five around mile 9. Climate is much more humid than inland but it felt really good. The weather was perfect.

Hey, great job out there on Sunday

You kept a pretty even pace throughout the race. (Note: Mile Marker 11 was out of place making 11 Long and 12 Short) You did great on your first Half

I too got a big kick out of the kids at mile 9 doing the High Fives and also some of the locals cheering from backyards. I also agree that this race was a bit less socal than normal for some reason. (Not sure why)

HB is such a great place to run a race anyway...

Great job and hope you come back for the Full next year.

Hey - Thanks for mentioning about the mile markers. That makes me feel better.

When I finally got the nerve to review the splits that I collected on my watch I was surprised because I didn't feel bad during mile 11. I was wondering if sucking down gu a few minutes before a water stop would make my pace jump from 10:40ish to 13:20!

This is an exciting accomplishment. I am one step closer to a HIM!! Whoo-hoo!
