I will be doing my first Ironman this year, I have read a lot of race reports and several athletes talk about having to go to the bathroom many times during a race, is this the norm? I have done half marathons, century rides, and a couple Powerman duathlons and have never had to go.

You've ridden a century ride and never had to pee?  Really?

Gosh, I'm usually peeing once an hour or sometimes more.

You must be some sort of camel! I'm usually having to hop off the ol' steed at least once every 90 mins or so.

Read my IM FL race report- all I did was pee the whole time!  If you hydrate well you should be peeing at some point.  I usually don't have to pee during 1/2 marathons, but have had to go during 1/2 IM's, centuries, and my IM.

If you race an IM and don't have to pee, then you are going to be in a world of hurt on the run b/c I'm betting you'll be seriously dehydrated.  Learn to pee off the bike, because you'll need to do it.

As for dropping the deuce, YMMV.  GI distress is common enough, but it's certainly possible to do the whole day without having to make that pit stop.  There are port-o-johns at every aid station on the bike and run.

Do people just pee on themselves?  What do you mean pee off the bike? Are there penalties for exposed peeing?  (these are real questions, not jokes).

Well it all depends how much water you are losing due to sweet. If you pee you may be over hydrating but its better to be over hydrated than dehydrated. In a marathon I usually pee twice but I am slow, its cold, and I am hydrating really well.

Yes people pee on themselves.  I'd practiced it on your long training rides so it can be perfected for the race.  I think this topic has been discussed in the Iron forum several times.  Lemme try and find an old thread.

We're talking an all day event...you're gonna have to pee numerous times.

All I know is that the wife doesn't like it when I pee while riding.....on the trainer in our living room.

Part of this depends on your gender, I suppose. When training in warm weather I just find a slight downhill (and I mean slight, this is no good at 30+ mph) turn to the right and whip it out and go. Cold weather gloves, or for that matter just cold weather, make this an unattractive option.

That method seems less common in IM where most people seem to go in their shorts. That's really your only option if you're wearing a one piece suit, too. Have a bottle of water to squirt yourself down with.

I use the former method because 1) I can, and 2) it's not messy.

If there are penalties for this, they are not enforced. Just try not to aim for the volunteers or police.

Yes, they do. It's a dirty little secret they don't expose when they showcase the IM on TV.

Most just pee in their shorts.

For me, I will be stopping at a port-o-john. I can't imagine riding all day with pee in the pad of my shorts. Not good for a woman at all.

Otherwise, to the original poster... if you aren't peeing... they are probably on the verge of dehydration. I think someone else already made comment to that.

As others said, if you don't have to pee during the ride you could be in trouble.  During IMWI this year I just went  off the road (I could have been penalized) I was so wet, I should have just gone in my shorts, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it.  I am sure I lost time, but if you are not trying for a Kona slot then stop and pee.  If you are going to "Race" then let it fly brother.

Thanks for the heads up, I will have to see how it goes on my long training days, I've always been one that is close to dehydration maybe that's why I don't have to go much, but I did do a century last August and it was 85 degrees and I did finish just under 5 hrs. and I felt great. I have never did anything over 10 hours and it sounds like I will be making a few pit stops.

Why do you think there's no drafting?
