How far apart is ideal to do a half ironman then an Ironman. Is 3 months enough time to let the body heal or should it be a little bit longer. I'm not looking to set a PR I just want to finish one.

That's such a tough question to answer as there are so many variables. I think it all depends on where your fitness level is at. How many years of base do you have? How quickly do you normally recover from BT workouts? How's your nutrition? How many hours do you have available to build enough endurance to go double the distances in all three sports?

Some IM training plans I've seen have a 1/2 IM 4 weeks out from an IM as part of the train-up, like a training race. If you do the 1/2 IM at a comfortable pace, it shouldn't be a problem.

it is very personal but here is what I have done.
2005: eagleman 70.3 around june 10, IM Wisconsin Sept 11 - no issues
2006: eagleman 70.3 around june 10, IM USA (Lake Placid) July 23 - no issues

you just have to make sure what your goals are and what is your "A" race. Then pace yourself accordingly and besure to give yourself the recovery you need.

NOT at all... in fact sometimes is a good idea to get a HIM in 6-8 weeks before the IM as a prep race session. In fact you can have your peak week anywhere between 4-6 weeks and that means a heavy training week between 15-20 hrs of training. How long it will take you to recover from the HIM and will take time away from IM that will depend on your fitness level and how hard you race it. That might be the biggest question though, how long it will take you away from IM training, but with proper and smart training you should be able to fit it into your plan…

I know we just started this season but I am building up to next season to get ready. Especially for most of the WTC they registration closes the same day that it opens so I need to start and plan on registering this year. I was thinking about doing the CA 70.3 and then the Florida Ironman at the end of the year or doing the Vineman in August and doing Flordia Ironman. I'm only going to being leaving San Diego at the Jan '09 so I want to make sure I get as much year around training as I can before I have to leave. I know I am spoiled from this weather.

My races for this year.

5K Tomorrow (2/11)
LA Bike Tour (3/4)
Wildflower Sprint (5/4)
San Diego Int'l (June)
IronGirl Texas (7/21)
LA Triathlon (9/10)
San Diego Tri Challenge (10/28)
Half Marathon (November)

I think it's plenty of time. In fact you can race the 1/2, take a week off followed by an easy transition week, and still have plenty of time for IM specific prep.
