Subject: Distance ice skating?
This past Sunday I decided to go out and do something I haven't done since I was a teenager.
Since it has been so cold, and we really haven't had that much snow, I went ice skating on the creek instead of my long run for the week.

I suited up in my winter running gear, but grabbed my ice skates instead of my shoes and I brought my 2 dogs along for company. I remembered my Garmin so I could track my workout.

It was a lot of fun. The ice was rough in spots, and soft under the bridges where salt had fallen down onto it, but overall it was a nice experience.

I skated a total of 7.2 miles in 1:03, turning around when I found open water on the creek.
This is not much faster than my running speed. I was a bit surprised, but I guess rough ice slows you down. My HR was in my running Z2 so I got my 1hr workout that I wanted.

There were a lot of tracks on the ice: deer, rabbit, fox, etc
I saw a couple of large hawks, and a few rabbits. No deer

The dogs had a blast running with me. They really seemed to enjoy the long trek into strange territory after they learned to start/stop/turn on ice without falling.

I enjoyed it so much I may try to get back and do it a few more times before the ice melts.
It was a nice change to the normal workouts.
I think being outdoors, in the woods, with constantly changing scenery made this great.
I don't think I could skate circles on a pond and be as happy.
(That's what hockey games are for)

Anyone else add distance skating to their training routine during the winter?

Sounds great! Loved doing it in MB & SK, but too much moving water water here to venture onto the river ice.

I have been doing some pond skating with my kids lately. It is a good workout - works different msucles in comparison to running. More glutes and low back. I only get my HR up to the equivalent of a brisk walk, but have been fantasizing of skating in Holland with Hans Brinker.

I would love to do a distance skate. Hmmm, you got me thinking...

Now I find out that we are supposed to get a bunch of snow.
If that happens that will likely end the creek skating.

I'm surprised no one from Ottawa has mentioned skating on the canal?
I've always wanted to try that.

I live a block from the canal but I'm afraid I don't skate much anymore due to an ankle problem that makes hard ice skates very painful to wear. Eventually I want to get some of the blades that attach to ski boots and see how that works.

There is a winter triathlon here at the beginning of February that saounds like a lot of fun - Skate, ski, run. One of these years I'll get back to skating and give it a try.

That sounds like a great workout!  And what a great way to mix it up!  I'm a little Jealous!  (not enough to actually wish we had frozen waterways here)

Yep!
But I do it on my Inline skates. The Inline Marathon at Disney is in April so just about time to get out there again! I miss the ice skates though, sounds like a blast!!!

I never thought about it either really, until Friday.
I drove across the bridge down the road and the creek was frozen, with no snow on it.

It was all could think of until I went to try it.

I love skating, and x-country skiing. I nice to mix things up seasonally.

Provided its not blowing like a thousand bast***s like it tends to sometimes here in Ottawa, the canal is a great workout! Skating the full ~16kms round trip certainly gets your heart rate pumping and if its not too crowded and you get up to a good speed its easy to stay warm. More than anything though it just makes me hate winter a little less! There's even the Winterlude triathlon.

It'd be interesting to know some of the equivalences of running and skating... something to think about anyway....
