I like to do yoga after a workout. It really loosens up my muscles and it relaxes me.

I like to do it before bed, seems to relax and make me sleepy at the end

I prefer Yoga after a run but before a swim, depending on my schedule and the Yoga class I've done the other way as well.

I don't see it as a big deal eithr way

Huh. You seem to be treating yoga the same as stretching. The class I do, Yoga IS a workout; it's not a warm-down or warm-up. In fact, I find that I can't do some of the more demanding poses (wheel, in particular) if I've been swimming the morning of an afternoon yoga session.

How long is the class you'll be taking? Mine's about an hour and a half, with a combination of a demanding instructor and a relaxing meditation period at the end. It wipes me out pretty good.

I think it depends on the type and length of Yoga practice you're considering.

If you are doing power yoga for an hour+, this is really a workout in itself. I do these once a week on Saturday morning.

If you are doing a Hatha yoga practice for 30min, it's more of a warm-up/stretch. I swim in the AM and have a 5min hot tub to warm up. My afternoon workouts (bike, run, or strength) are preceeded with a 30min "stretching" yoga. My cool down involves traditional stretching.

I don't think it matters whether you are doing your yoga pre or post workout. Just make sure you are getting a good warm-up stretch pre and post workout.

I don't have much info to back this up, but its something you might want to look into for yourself...

I have had a doctor (of osteopathic medicine) and a massage therapist tell me that stretching before a workout is simply not good.  I don't know why, but I would be curious to find out if anyone out there has some info on why it is bad.

On the other hand, stretching after a workout (and between workouts) is vital and should be done often.

Just thought I would relay what I have been told...

I am just trying to understand what you professionals are saying. Are they saying you should just go into your workout full bore without any warm up or stretching? Not even any light stretching before?

Warm-up - yes, definitely

Deep stretching - no

I've heard this before too, from a very experienced (track) coach. The idea as I understood it is that it's bad to stretch cold muscles (sort of a no-brainer) and that easing into the workout is better for you. If you really needed to stretch something, then warm up with an easy two miles first, then stretch, then do your workout. Always stretch afterwards. It was an interesting philosophy, and as far as I'm concerned it felt better than when I had a coach who thought that a 400m jog was enough of a warmup before a stretching session.

If you're looking for improved balance, form, technique, do it before. If you are looking to have a high quality workout in the pool/track, do it after.

I loook at yoga as a completely separate activity (or workout, depending), so I don't even do it as "yoga" before or after another activity (running or riding). If I do, it's not really a full yoga routine, and I just call it "stretching".

I prefer after a work out at the end of the day. I find it relaxing and it really helps me unwind.
