Subject: 1/2 Mary 3wks after sprint?
Hey guys, I have a few sprints and a 10K under my belt, but this year I have an aggressive race schedule and am trying to put effort into actually training the "right" way. So, I'm setting up my schedule for the year, and since the races aren't super far apart I'm having some trouble figuring out what to train for when (and when to rest).

My main problem is I'm running (my first) half marathon 3 weeks after a sprint tri. Do I take it easy the weeks before and after the tri, work hard one week, then take it easy again? Will I be too rested? The half mary is my big goal for the year, so I want to be well prepared. Thoughts?

For a sprint, you probably won't need a multiple-week taper. I would say that if you work a taper in the last week or 5 days before your sprint, you should be fine. As for recovery time afterwards, it's different for everybody but you may need a day or two or three to bounce back from the tri. I would guess that you'll be ready for a 1/2 mary 3 weeks later without issue.

If your endurance training is toward the half-mary, then you should have PLENTY of recovery capacity to not have to take much down-time at all after the sprint tri. Two to three easier days should do you fine. But don't try to cram your run distance training into the three weeks between.

And tapering for a sprint... Maybe a day or two.

What Training Plan are you following for your Half Marathon?

I ask because most plans will schedule the Longest Long Run 2-4 weeks before the race and then go into taper. My only concern with doing the sprint would be your ability to complete all of the workouts in your training plan for the Half at the proper intensity. (Especially the Long Runs)

FWIW: Many training plans include the concept of a Tuneup Race in the phases of training and so the idea of racing in the middle of a training cycle is not entirely out of hand.

I live by the ideal that there is no such thing as too much rest.  I once did three races in 3 weeks.  A sprint tri, a 5k race, and then a 10 mile race.  I simple did nothing between the 5k and the 10k.  I just listened to my body and it told me that I still wasn't ready to do anthing on Wed, after the race on Sunday, so I didn't.  Thursday either, and then the race was on Saturday again, so I just took it easy friday.  I think I might have run 2 miles just to stretch out.

I'd say listen to your body, and if you think you can do it, do it.  If you feel sick, tired, injury coming on, don't do it.  Simple.

Good luck though!

I second this... two to three days tops before and after the sprint. In fact I would simply view the sprint as a hard training day.

Which race is more important? Is either an A race for the season?

The answers to these questions should help guide you to how you want to address your taper and recovery.

I'm doing the opposite, a half-mary then two weeks later a sprint. While I am by no means an expert, I tried to overlap the two training schedules and it worked out great. If you haven't yet, make an attempt to organize your training schedule through the sprint and you can do a little juggling. Seeing it on paper really helps.

I expect to also listen to my body and rest when necessary, knowing that the half-mary will really benefit from the rest. I think it's definitely possible! I am glad to hear the responses you received too, that basically the sprint is "small enough" that a short taper and recovery are fine.

Here's to aggressive race schedules! This year anyway...

well all depends on your training.

2005 I did a half mary,full mary,half mary,8 mile run, then full mary then 3 weeks later 50k.
ok I do not beleive in 20 milers in marathon training. I beleive in doing more marys .

Question to is do you want to finish or do well in the 1/2 mary?
either way I would focus more on the 1/2 mary if I was you. Make sure you do your long runs in. you need to get used to the distance running. do atleast 1 more mid week and fill in with swimming and biking. I would make sure you get in the cardio time though

If you run a 10 min mile and your midweek run is 4 miles or 40 mins I would make sure you bike or swam that day for atleast those many minutes.

Beauty of tris is you could end up over training for the half mary but not injury yourself because of xtraining and do really well in thoery. I have not really ran a race since I got into tris because of a long nagging running injury though. stupid 2006.

I third the notion, but as always, depending on your fitness level.
