I will be on business travel from Feb 26 through Mar 9. Would like to do an ocean swim. Never done before only lake open water swim.

Right now it's pretty darn cold!  Pack a neoprene/hothead swim cap if you have one, or bring 2 or 3 latex ones.

Watch the LATriClub.com calendar for group swims.  Swims are being added all the time as racing season starts, but be sure to email the contact person just in case (we had 2 beach closures in the last few weeks in Venice, for example).  You don't want to be out there alone as a first-timer.

And have an amazing time in the great SoCal water!!!

Like Gail says, the water is fairly cold.

If you want practice with waves, Huntington has miles of beach. All life guard stations are closed until summer so you are on your own unless you find a friend. Normal waves are about 3 feet. Can be as much as 10 feet if there are offshore storms.

There is a lovely pier in Huntington Beach, but currents can take you into the pier pilings if you get too close.

The surfers are not used to looking for swimmers, so stay away from large groups of surfers.

Long Beach, which is about 12 miles away has a break water, so no waves. But without the waves to recirculate the water, the water can be a little bit dirtier than beaches with waves.

Water temps were about 58 to 62 degrees last week.

If you can, head a few minutes south to Newport Beach. Right south of the Peninsula, there is a beach in Corona Del Mar that actually has a course set up permantly in the water. It's fairly calm, and the course is about 100-200m offshort. I can't tell, but it feels like a swim out there.

Best of luck

Yes, Corona Del Mar. That's where I've done my OWS's in the past. There are two jetties which form the entrance to the Newport Bay, on one side (North) is the Wedge, on the other is the beach with buoys set up to swim around.

Let me know if you guys decide to go to CDM. I have a new 2xu wetsuit I'd like to try out.....and, I'm nervous to give it a go alone.

Also, I believe there is a group of triathletes that goes down there on Wed or Thurs nights in the summer!

Shoot me a message if you guys go, and I might tag along.

Unfortunately I can't commit right now as I've go a sick wife and a sick son. IF I were able to it would have to be either Thursday or Friday afternoon. Does that even work, if not we should try next week.

I am looking at Saturday or Sunday. Im tied up at the Boeing plant for both weeks.
I brought a full and sleeveless wetsuit with me just in case the temps were too low. I can be reached at 254-319-1343. Staying at the Long Beach Holiday Inn. Hope we can hook up.

Thanks
