I just got back from cross country skiing about 90 minutes from where I live, in an area that about 10 years ago (before medical school) I used to spend endless hours recreating in during every season, hiking, mountain biking, fishing, camping, skiing (downhill, cross-country, telemark, backcountry).

I felt like I was home again...hard to believe I let that much time go by forgetting that PIttsburgh is in the vicinity of some really incredible state parks & state forests.

So what is your favorite wintery sport that you would pick to do?

Gack! I can't edit the poll and I hit enter too soon. Oh well, this way it will be a list of our favorite sports...

Cross country skiing.  I started about 15 years ago and love it!  When I was a kid up to a twenty something adult, I used to love ice skating, but haven't done that in years.  I think I need to dust off the ol' skates.

I want to go snowboarding someday...

Get yer butt out here before May, and it'll happen.

I'll even save you a lift pass.

No, really: Surfing

Some of the best surf in SoCal happens in the Winter Time. Those Burly Winter storms that form in the gulf of Alaska throw some very big surf our way and if you can brave the cold water, NoCal and CenCal are the places to catch this stuff.

My favorite place to catch some if this epic winter surf is Santa Cruz on the north end of Monterey Bay. (Steamer Lane, Pleasure Point and some other less well known spots are the best)

I love downhill skiing.  I've been trying to learn how to snowboard, too, although I'm not very good at it.  Can't do it nearly as much as I'd like living in Virginia.

I love cross-country skiing and snowshoeing but the PA winters have been so mild that I've rarely had a chance to get out there. The snow is no where near deep enough to snowshoe and I have to travel about 40+ miles in any direction to get some deep snow. Happy Valley just doesn't seem to get dumped on like it used to.

Well the snow is out there now. I was up on Laurel Ridge yesterday, maybe a 90 minute drive from happy valley? It was snowshoe able in the woods and xc skiiable.

I started snowboarding a few years ago... nothing fancy, but I liked it better than skiing.  Unless of course I catch an edge.  Ouch!

And after my first two days of  learning... the back of both of my thighs turned completely black.  But it got better.

 Peace.

I LOVE snowboarding.  I took it up a few years ago and it is the best ever.  I NEVER got better at skiing, but snowboarding (although very tough at first, I can actually tell I am improving so, it's the best.)

I've done cross country skiing and I'd like to like it, but my ankles are SO bad that they are sore after a day, and also the skis are so skinny that there is not enough support and my ankle will turn while I am just standing there and dump me on my butt, which is no fun.

I'd like to try snowshoeing, I think that could be a blast.

I clicked on telemark skiing just because us tele skiers have to stick together. I actually spend much more time cross country skiing as the trail network in the Gatineau Park is one of the best there is. I love both though.

I'd have to say my fav winter sport is snowshoeing. I grew up downhill and cross country skiing since I lived near Mt. Hood, but haven't done any skiing in a few years. It's just too expensive. I started snowshoeing a couple of years ago,  and it is an incredible workout. More importantly for me though, is that it is incredibly beautiful and peaceful. I just love the way the world sounds when covered in snow...muffled and peaceful!  I haven't done any snowshoeing yet this winter, but fortunately we've had a good year for snow so there is plenty of opportunity.

Telemarking is nothing like telemarketing, don't worry . Its when XC "like" bindings are mounted on downhill skis. When making a turn you "Drop" your inside knee lifting your heel up and bending your knee. At least this is the way I understand it having never tried it myself. Its on the to-do list for my next pilgrammage out west.
