Pre-race routine:

I headed up to Bribie on the Sunday morning and drove through about 3 rain showers and started to get ready for the possibility of a wet race. By the time I got to registration the rain had clear and it looked like being a fine day.
Event warmup:

As I was laying out my gear in transition I caught up with some buddies from work. We were all hyped and keen for a good race and set off for the swim start. We watched and cheered on some of the competitors in the short course and I was glad to see that there was a strong current in the water. It was going to be a fast swim today.
Swim
  • 13m 59s
  • 1000 meters
  • 01m 24s / 100 meters
Comments:

I got to watch a couple of the wave starts before mine and saw numerous competitors misjudge the first turning buoy because the strong current was pulling them off course. By the time I started I knew the best place to start to get the full benefit of the strong current. Unfortunately, as I soon as I started the swim, my goggles filled up with water. I stopped to empty them but as soon as I started again they filled up straight away. In the end I swam about 3/4 of the course with my goggles around my neck. I had to close my eyes every couple of strokes because my eyes stung like crazy in the salt water. Luckily for me even when I stopped to try and see where I was going the current was still pushing me along the course.
What would you do differently?:

Have a warm up swim to test my goggles??
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I found my bike fairly easily as it was close to the end of the rack and donned my helmet and glasses and scooted out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really.
Bike
  • 47m 3s
  • 28 kms
  • 35.71 km/hr
Comments:

I jumped on my bike and got into my shoes without any dramas and got into a good rhythm. Half way through the ride it started to rain and also the wind picked up. To combat this, I tried to concentrated on keeping low on my tri bars as I went into the wind (averaged about 28 - 30kph) and then ride flat out as I turned back with the tail wind (38 - 42kph). Overall my bike computer showed that my speed was around 33kph over the course which was good considering the wind and rain.
What would you do differently?:

My bike times are improving every race so i just need to keep up my training.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

I racked my bike and put on my wet runners but decided against putting on my socks as they were soaked through.
What would you do differently?:

It all went well.
Run
  • 39m 11s
  • 8 kms
  • 04m 54s  min/km
Comments:

Running in wet shoes is never much fun and I could feel my feet slipping around in my shoes, this was only going to end with blisters. The good thing was that the rain had cooled the temperature and so it wasn't very hot. I felt pretty comfortable throughout the run and was running at about 5 minute k pace. The last 2 k's I picked up the pace and finished it in about 9 minutes.
What would you do differently?:

Cover my shoes and socks with a plastic bag if it looks like rain.
Post race
Event comments:

Overall I'm really happy with the race, apart from my trouble with my goggles in the swim and my 3 blood blusters that have now surfaced. I used this race to gauge my readiness for the oly tri in March and a bit of a confidence builder. Bring on March 25!!!

Sheesh, the men in Brisbane can swim. That's a fast time you posted and with goggles issues. I know there was a current, but still, you made up six spots in the bike and run. Not too shabby at all!!

Bring on March 25 indeed!!!

ok - a lot faster than last year (tick) despite a very average swim ... way to go

sounds like you had a very similar race to me on the weekend (apart from me being slower than last year ). I was buggering around and missed the swim start, had a good bike and a very average run. ... must have been the moon phase or something

Hope the blisters get better and don't hold the training up too much.

Awesome race and great report

awesome race, your swim was smokin, I love how Aussies are such great swimmers.

Like the snap too, you look like you are really pushing yourself!!!

Congrats mate, well bloody done. Whats up with the goggles? Have you got tri specific goggles? They are so much better than plain swimmers goggles, the tri ones are made for open water swimming...much better. I had to learn that the hard way as you did.  But really, it didn`t show with your times!

I`ll be there in 2 weeks, can`t wait!

well done again! Bring on March 25th!!
