"Trogdor was a man....who wasn't a man..."

Yeah, I think Homer and I swim at the same pool.

I'll bet you are pretty good at keeping your mouth closed.

I'd complain. Someone's not doing their job.

by the way... I'm not saying it's healthy... or even a good thing... A lot of open water is dirty too.

Most of the things that are really bad for you, you can't see anyway. So I would be less worried about the bugs and hairballs and more worried about the cloudiness.

I have seen an occasional scary hair ball at my pool. It's good practice for staying calm if you see something weird in the water of a real tri event!

I would casually ask someone, "So, what's with the pool water?" If they ask, "What do you mean?" then tell them. Maybe they already know there is a problem and they are working on it. But if you get the impression they aren't working on it, can't afford to fix it or just won't bother, then find someplace else to swim.

P.S. A body in balance in a state of well-being is one of our best defenses from the multitudes of stuff we get exposed to. Stay positive and happy and go from there!

Ugh - gross!  Funny, when I read this, I thought about what my personal threshold is for these things.  In my local pools, I've tolerated bits of flotsam and jetsum, even an errant Band-Aid or two, but when I saw a tampon, I drew the line and cornered the gym staff.  Worse, like someone said above; it is the stuff you can't see that is nasty; for you contact-wearers out there - be sure to rinse your contacts well if you wear them in the pool.  They capture bacteria big time.

Cloudy water and a few hairballs does not bother me too much.  Although the pool I swim at (once in awhile) is squeaky clean, I do swim in rivers and lakes that may or may not be so pristine.

However, this is a public pool and should be clear and healthy at all times.  Contact the school's Athletics Admin and complain about the conditions.  If nothing is done then contact your local Health and Safety Board.

Homer J - 2007-02-19 3:08 PM ...It is pretty dirty/cloudy...

The water should be clear. If it is cloudy all of the time, there is a problem and you should speak to them about it.

Worse case scenario, it makes you swim faster. Who the hell wants to swim in dirty dead bug filled water?
