Minneapolis, Minnesota
United States
U of M Rec Sports Deparment
Total Time = 1h 30m
Overall Rank = 29/70
Age Group = 18-24
Age Group Rank = 8/13
Pre-race routine:

Got up, got dressed and ate a bagel on the way down to the U of MN. Met up with the BTers and walked around a bit.
Event warmup:

We were dressed and ready to go at 8:30am, but they wouldn't start until 9am. I swam a lap before the start of the swim.
Swim
  • 30m
  • 1250 yards
  • 02m 24s / 100 yards
Comments:

Well, I did awesome and was on track for 30 laps in 30 minutes, but at lap 23 I felt really sick and almost threw up. I stopped and hung out at the side of the pool for 5 minutes. I felt a little better after that.
What would you do differently?:

Swim more in training, and not get sick.
Transition 1
  • 10m
Comments:

It went well! I was more organized this year and knew I didn't have much time for transition, but had 3 minutes left when I got upstairs.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing :)
Bike
  • 30m
  • 7.27 miles
  • 14.54 mile/hr
Comments:

Well, I almost ran someone over on my precor stationary bike!!!

My bike went well, other than not being able to get my SPDs to work on the pedals. I had the resistance at 3, and was going at about 100 cadence most of the time. I did well, but I think the recorded bike distance was off.
What would you do differently?:

Practice on the precor stationary bikes.
Transition 2
  • 10m
Comments:

Went well - I walked around and stretched.
Run
  • 30m
  • 3.23 miles
  • 09m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

Wow - my max HR was 191! I started at 6.0 and went up slowly - 6.2 at 8minutes, 6.4 at 15 minutes, etc. I started increasing 0.2mph/minute at 20minutes and ended at 8.5mph. I guess I could have ran the first 15 minutes at a faster pace, but I didn't know I would have that much energy left at the end.
What would you do differently?:

Train at a faster pace
Post race
Warm down:

Wobbled as I was trying to get off the dreadmill...stammered over to the other BTers...my legs were jello!!! I recovered pretty quickly - stretched for a while and talked with the BTers.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

#1 Training.
#2 Feeling sick on the swim.

Event comments:

I really enjoyed this race and wish I would've trained more for it...I needed a kick in the butt. I am glad I was able to finish - I didn't think I would be able to when I got sick in the pool, but it went away. It was fun hanging out with BTers afterward and at the Loring Pasta Bar, even though their service was definitely subpar.

My overall rankings are for women only, I didn't account for the men.

You did great, consider you didn't train or feel great You made the same mistake I did thinking a higher cadence made a difference on the bike. You can make a bigger gain with higher resistance - stupid. Next year I guess.

i bet it was BAD! the first year kelly and i did it, i remember walking through those rooms as we left and it felt like we were in a sauna...and that was just a few hours after the first wave! the woman who i knew there who was racing said the heat was really bothering people in her wave, and they were about an hour behind us.
