Subject: My bike seat vs my crotch
My ride today was pretty painful on the ole man parts. I also read today that regular bike seats are bad for genitals as they cut off blood flow. Anybody else have any ideas for a seat replacement, or thoughts on this?

I'm thinking of going with this seat:

That's a pretty non-conventional seat, essentially a padded seat with no nose of which to speak.  I could be wrong, be something tells me that's not your answer.

While there's no consensus, as saddle choice seems to be very personal; the following saddles always seem to often ellicit recommendations: Profile Design Tri Stryke (my current saddle--and relatively inexpensive at that) and the triathlon-specific models by Selle San Marco, Fizik, and Adamo (get ready to lighten your wallet for the latter 3 makes).

One common design thread amongst the above is a LONG nose on the saddle--providing you with more positions (sliding forward and back along the nose) to ride in.

I also suggest investing in a quality pair of cycling shorts.  Makes a big difference.

Another vote for the Profile Design TriStryke seat.  It has a center cut-out and a padded nose.  I've found it to be comfortable either riding upright on my brake hoods or on my clip-on aerobars.

Good luck,

Mark

I would suggest a quality bike fitting session to make sure that your positioning is correct. Also, a seat with a wider back can help support your frame and help to allow adequate blood flow to the important areas. I do not know how long you have been riding but the more you ride the better. Generally, if the fit is good and you have a proper seat, your body will adjust.

I'm on the Profile Design TriStryke also and I like it.  Make sure you have your local bike store help you set it up and get the angle correct.

Before you do anything, check your saddle height. Most of the time, that is the problem. When you are at the bottom of your pedal stroke (not when the cranks are vertical from the ground, but completely parallell to the seat tube), your knee should be about slightly bent at 150 degrees measured from the "ankle bone" to the "hip bone". Probably lots lower than you thought you should be. This will prevent you from putting undo pressure on your "soft tissue" and also stop your hips from rocking back and forth, robbing you from substantial power.

If that doesn't work, I would try a somewhat more conventional seat.... The Profile Design is supposed to be good (haven't tried it myself, but others seems to think its good...) or my favorite, Fizik Arione Tri (or the Arione road for the road bike.)

I've also had the sore seat contact area here lately - I think some of this is just due to riding outside again and in the aero positon.  For me, I just have to get used to it again and I think that will come with more riding.  Until then I'm squirming, sitting up and complaining.

I also changed my position recently and that may have something to do with it.

A couple of other things I do are tilt the saddle down very slightly and angle it to one side again very very slightly.  These may or may not help.

Fizik Arione regular for me, although i will probably try the tri version when this one falls apart, which it is starting to...

Things to consider in order of importance

1. Your position on the bike
2. the orientation of the saddle
3. time in the saddle
4. the saddle itself
5. unusual physiology on the part of the rider
6. shorts

Personally I think that nose-less saddles are less than desirable for most riders because you lose a point of contact that is important to controling the bike.

What he said! Plus add a cream, such as Butt-R to minimize the abrasive wear on skin.

I think the others missed your post that yesterday was your first ride.   Your butt is not used to sitting on a seat at all!  Give it some time to get used to being on a bike.   It will not feel great for about a month.   If you were actually experiencing numbness, you probably have your seat pointed too far up or too high.   Adjust it slightly downward or level and sit a little back on it so the only place you feel pressure is your sits bones (the bones it your butt).   numbness is bad, if you are just a little sore, then you probably haven't broken in your butt or your seat.

P.S.  Make sure you are using padded bike shorts too.

I was having that same problem when I first started biking, what I did was make sure to nose down the front of the saddle a bit, that seemed to help out a lot, but regardless, I soon bought one of those cut out saddles, and didnt have the problem again.  I have a regular saddle now and never have the problem.  I assume it is a problem most experienced by new riders getting their body used to the saddle.  Good luck, and don't let anyone call you numbnuts!

So err uhhh, my dick is not going to fall off? Because that is what I was led to believe by some of the articles found on a google search

Btw, my bike seat is level, I have an ok pair of bike shorts, and I think that my seat height is correct. I know there is some bend in my knees at the bottom of a stroke, but I am going to make sure that my knees are at a 150 degree angle.

When I was first getting started I replaced the saddle on my mtn.bike with one from Specialized. I liked it. Later I bought a Specialized road bike with the same saddle, though during the fitting they swapped it for a different size of the same model seat. I think one of the key features is the raised bit that my sit-bones rest on, keeping most of the weight off of softer parts.

here's a new word to add to your vocabulary...say it with me now...

A$$ HATCHET

most bikes, especially road and tri bikes, come complete with their own a$$ hatchet. i've never kept the saddle any of my bikes came with ('cept the old school brooks thats on my dunelt 3 speed). i've had good luck with the serfas saddles, terry, etc. i don't think the ergo is the answer, either. if you really want to go that route though, check out this one: http://ismseat.com

I will be purchasing the Adamo saddle soon myself, because nerve pain in your junk region aint just for boys!  I have actually had many discussions with Steve at ISMseat.com about women and the seat and he said that 3 pro women exclusively use their saddles: Hillary Biscay-USA, Bella COmerford-Scottland, and Emma Weitnaur-Australia.

I'm looking at getting one at sportsbasement also...good price. There are two, the one for $40 has Hollow CroMoly rails and 305 grams. The other, $60, has Tubular Titanium rails and 285 grams. Not so concerned about the weight but the rails. I'm about 205 lbs...I'm guessing the titanium is stronger...would the CroMoly (whatever that is) be strong enough?

I have been using the touring verson. I found it to be the best seat for me.

I found ones with the groove the groove is too short for me and the end is where all my problems come in.

Actually, hard saddles are better for men as they put the pressure on the sit bones, not the softer tissue.  With a soft saddle your sit bones sink in, basically allowing the entire area to come under pressure...

Not sure if this is true for women also, but I suspect it would be...
