When I choose to run indoors I use the treadmill at my local gym. My problem is I will plan to do a longer run and it always cuts off after 30minutes, right when I am in the  swing of things. Now I have to stop and rev it up again to the pace I was on. This always messes up my timing, consistancy, and the numbers on the treadmill I have worked to get. Does anyone know how to correct this problem?

Some gyms enforce a time limit so others can share. That may be your problem.

as you may or may not have noticed, most gyms limit the use of equipment durning peak hours to 30 minutes.  Consequently, they probably have pre-programmed this same equipment to stop at 30min.  How to change this??.  When you start the machine, go to manual programming and try to change the time to more than 30 minutes.

If the gym is packed, I'll stick to 30 minutes, it's only fair. If there are open treadmills when I start, this is what I do: I program in 15 minutes only, and run a warmup. AT the end of 15 minutes, if the gym is full and someone wants it, I can point out I only did 15 minutes, then do another 15 and give it up. More often than not, there is no one waiting, so then I'll put in 30 minutes. At the end of that chunk of time I'll reassess. If no one is wainting and I need to do more, i'll punchin another 15, otherwise, I'm happy to get off the treadmill at that point.

I guess that's cheating a little bit, but if figure if there is no one waiting when I start the 2nd 30 minute block, it's fair game.

Bottom line is that like you, i don't want to be interupted in teh middle of a nice run, so by programming in teh warmup separately, I can have 30 minutes unitnerupted when I'm already warmed up.

My gym has a limit.. 30 minutes. The treadmills are not programmed though so I usually just keep running until they tell me to get off. On monday while doing intervals, I made it to 46 minutes before I was asked to get off.. was in the middle of my last one.. so I finished up and gave it up. It pains me to have to get off for someone who is going to trot for 20 minutes while holding the rails, but I guess fair is fair.

If someone kicked me off I'd get a new gym.

Chances are if they have programmed the limit to 30 minutes, you will not be able to work around it.

The best work around is run outside, or find an indoor track to run on.

I find running on a treadmill very hard, not because of the boredom, but because it forces me to run at the same speed.  Most runners slow and speed up while they run, I find the constant speed forces me to tire faster and work differently than I am adjusted to.

Back at my college gym this rule was strictly enforced (along with the spray bottles to clean off the machines). But at my current gym it's just a sign on the wall that NO ONE reads. I get annoyed when I'm ready to go at 5:15 and there are no treadmills open, but I don't want to stop at 30 either. I think the solution should be to get more treadmills, not push us out on the rainy streets. And while they're at it, open a friggin window when it's raining and there's 8 million people sweating inside - talk about muggy. Hmm, I think I've drifted to the gym peeves thread... or the "get a new gym" thread... or maybe the "I hate rain" thread...

Run outside.  If it's cold, bundle up and suck it up; it builds character.

One gym I went to had a 30 minute limit programmed into the treadmills when starting. While using the manual program, I discovered that during the workout I could adjust the timer as well as the speed and incline. The final totals included the full workout then too. I only used that when there were empty machines though.

Well, you probably can't fix it. Some of the gyms do that so you can't stay on one forever.

I would suggest you finding a good stopping point... and restarting it before it cuts off.

Otherwise here was my THREE treadmill experience today... just trying to run a measly 3 miles:

Started running treadmill one- feeling great! Then it turns off: User Not Detected.

I go to treadmill two- feeling great and working on some speed work, it turns off: User Not Detected.

I go to treadmill three to run .15 more to finish my mileage... I end up going a little further to get a solid 3 miles in.

Frustrating treadmills!

On a positive note: I was really feeling great running today! No cramps! My blisters hurt some but I could deal with it.

hope you didn't get a complex from the treadmills not even knowing you were there... or maybe you saw it as a sign you were very light on your feet?

my gym does the same thing - its to enforce the 30 min limit so everyone gets a chance on the cardio equipment. i like adventurebear's idea of programming your warm up separately, i'm stealing that.

The mills at my Y cut out at 30 minutes too.  Gym policy is that you have to get off and sign up for another block at that point, even if there isn't anyone waiting.

Warming up for 15 minutes first is a great idea if you're planning a run of 45 minutes or less.  Normally, I'll just take a quick break in the middle to change mills at the 30 minute mark.  I jot my distance on a paper towel while I'm signing up for the next block.

HA! HA! Never saw it that way.

I guess it's those 2 pounds I lost... I'm just too light to be recognized as a User !
