Pre-race routine:

Had my diet coke and snickers low carb marathon bar. Got to the race site a bit early, but I wasn't sure about parking and traffic. Would rather be early than late any way!
Event warmup:

None really- just some light stretching, jumping up and down to keep warm. I'm not so good that a warm up helps me much yet.
Run
  • 1h 02m 8s
  • 6.21 miles

Comments:

First of all, all times were started with the gun time. Even though it was probably 15 seconds at least before I crossed the start line. So my time includes that, which sucks because even though I beat my goal of 63 minutes, in the back of my mind I really wanted to have a sub 62 finish, which would be just under 10 minute miles.

Still say I was really sub 62, I really prefer the races where there is a separate chip time for each person that starts when YOU cross the starting line.

Run started out better than expected. At mile 2 I was only at 19:00 minutes. But then at mile 2.2 the stomach pains started. I wanted to stop but I pushed through it even though my pace was affected. The pains subsided at mile 3.2 and I was able to pick it back up a bit. Played leap frog with a man who had to be close to 80. He was pretty speedy on the flats but I'd pass him on the hills. Heading into mile 4 it got pretty hilly so I left him, but I'm sure he finished not too far behind me.

I feel like I am accustomed to hills, but there was one in particular that kicked my butt at mile 5 to mile 5.8 there was a climb of about 160 ft or so. Right when I was trying to pick up some speed.
What would you do differently?:

Wear something else. I got really hot. I dressed according to the weather at the start and I was a bit warm by the end.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some Gatorade and water and walked around a bit and headed back to my car, which was about a half mile away. Stayed away from the beer at the finish, even though I would have loved it. It's just hard to drink beer at 10 am. I'm not that hard core.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach cramps at mile 2.2- 3.2. All the dang hills!

Event comments:

Packet pick up was a nightmare. Very disorganized. Only 2 water stations on the course. I didn't stop at them, I was worried about the cramping coming back, but with as many hills as there were I am sure others needed more than 2 drink stations. Not enough volunteers. The finish line area was so crowded that it was hard to get out of the way. There weren't signs directing you to the food and drinks, I got lucky to see someone handing out Gatorade. I just feel like it could have been more organized.

good job. I waited too long and the event was full when I showed up Friday night. It was O.k. though. I went for a ride with the Carolina Triathlon Folks. It was a beautiful day.

Great job on the race. I agree, it was disorganized for how many years this race has been going on. I am still feeling that mile 5 hill. Hope to see you at some of the PSTS tris this year.

Thanks everyone! And yes Pam, you'll see me at Clemson, Festival of Flowers, Greenville, and SCHIM.

I thought I was getting faster, but I'm still BOP. Oh well, I want to get my money's worth out of the course. LOL!!!

Suzanne you may think you're BOP but you would definitely be smokin' me. Nice job on a tough course.

Nice race!  Way to get through those cramping issues too!  I agree I prefer chip timed events but it sounds like you had fun anyway.

Way to go!
