After buying new bike last summer my bike fund has been replenished and Im at a loss as to what to do with it. My tri bike has race wheels so no need to get those. Right now Im leaning toward a carbon road bike or a power meter. If I went with the power meter I'd probably get the Ergomo being I ride 650s on my tri bike and if later on I bought a road bike Id just have to get another bb. Any other suggestions or recommendations? Right now Im leaning toward the power meter 60/40.

Power Meter x 10!! It's one of the best investments you can make to better your cycling. One other suggestion is an aero helmet (according to MIT they are as beneficial as an aero wheel set).

AND MY DIAMOND SHOES ARE TOO TIGHT, AND I'M BOTH TOO RICH AND TOO THIN, AND HAVING ALL THIS PAPER MONEY IN MY WALLET MAKES IT HARD TO FOLD IN HALF AND FIT IN MY WALLET, AND . . .

Sorry to hear about your difficulty.

Well, if you've got your race setup all paid for, why not put money towards training? Computrainer? Personal coach? Weekend training workshop?

Actually they are not diamond shoes.....they are ruby red slippers and they fit perfectly.

As far as being to thin; I keep waiting for whoever it was that lost those 15 pounds to come back and claim them but they havent yet so I guess Ill keep carrying it with me until someone else says they want it. You arent volunteering are you?

And here is a trick with the paper money....dont do it, put the money in a savings account. I suggest the ING Orange savings account. Oh and live debt free and below your means, that way there is big car payment that can be put away for the important stuff.....like bikes.

Or you can go to Iraq on an all expense paid trip by the government. Unfortunately I used all of that money to pay off all my bills though.

Thats a good suggestion though with the computrainter. I hadnt thought of that one. Weekend workshops are hard though because Im a single parent and I like to set aside the weekends for just the 2 of us. Personal coach, hmmmm another good though; Ill have to look into that one

How about triathlon travel? Pick someplace far away & exotic that you wouldn't normally race that just happens to have a triathlon. Just my 2 cents. Probably suggested because I am going to Florence Italy in a few weeks & can't wait to get a few training runs & maybe a swim in. Good luck spending the dough. Matt

1) Power meter -- useful on the trainer on on the road

2) Tri coach -- able to make sure you're using your power meter to its full benefit (plus all the other goodness that a coach provides)

3) Set up a philanthropic fund for poor, underpriveledged David's near Dallas that need race wheels.

Seriously; think outside of the box on this one. I bought a gas grill last year, and still think of it as a training tool -- I eat more grilled vegetables and chicken breast because of it. Less fat, more flavor, better overall nutrition, better race day performance.

other ideas for "outside the box" training/racing purchases:

master's swim membership
registration fees for 26 5K's -- one every other weekend all year long
bike rack for car
commute bike
massage therapy
professional LT/VO2MAX testing
LCD TV/DVD to go in front of indoor bike trainer
Lifetime USAT membership
parktools pro bike workstand; bike tool set
membership fee, local run club/bike club/singles hookup club
new wetsuit
VASA trainer
Soloflex
Top-of-the-line Garmin 305

Hey, it's fun to spend other people's money!

Get a powermeter...I love mine and it has helped my indoor training, helped my coach help me improve more, as a numbers person I find training more fun doing it by numbers and I know it will make me faster this year.

Another BB is not cheap for a second bike though...I have two bikes and have a powertap..one wheel and two harnesses only $70 for a second bike.

I like the vasa trainer idea. I wish I could join a masters swim program but the nearest on is close to 2hrs away. The workstand and tool set is another good idea. I think a new tv is a great idea also, but I cant justify spending that much money (go figure) when my 10 yo one works fine. I know, I know you can pick them up pretty cheap but I just cant do it.

I like the LT/VO2 testing idea as well.

Another thought I had a cheap road bike and a trailer so I can go on long rides on the weekend with my son. I how much suck it would be tow an extra 75 pounds behind me.....

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I was getting kind of focused on my original 2 ideas and these gave me some other to think of. I appreciate it.

Have you seen the Ibike? I am thinking about getting one... it measures your power output, altitude, wind speed, cadence...... and it is only $399

...it measures your power output....

No it doesn't. It calculates your watts based on wind speed, bike speed and some assumptions about the drag of the rider and bike.

It doesn't measure the force you're putting into the pedals like a SRM/Ergomo/PowerTap.

Sorry to put out false statements but aren't watts a measure of power?

Everyone doesn't have the thousands and thousands of dollars to spend on power cranks, etc.

I think Jeep Fleeb was trying to point out that the ibike estimates wattage vs. actually measuring the force applied to the drivetrain.  Big difference.

IMO, The other BIG problem with the iBike is that it won't work on the trainer!  It requires air pressure from forward motion to deduce power expenditure.

I would love to have a power meter option in that price range, but I need something that works whenever I ride.
