Pre-race routine:

I futzed about for a good while trying to decide what to wear. The day started off at about 35 degrees, but suny, by the time the gun (they had a costumed re-enactor actually shoot a musket) went off, it was in the high 40's I was glad I settled on a long-sleeved cycling jersey (wool) shorts, and a cap (freebie from the Montrail booth guy...cool). Drank a little accelerade, chatted with my friend who was running the 5k
Event warmup:

Jogged around a little

Comments:

My strategy of pacing off my friend (who is roughly just as fast as I am) for the first 5k worked out quite well. I got passed by 2 guys early in the second half of the race. I managed to pass the guy who I was following for the whoke second half of the race about 200 yards before the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Not a thing.
Post race
Warm down:

Ate a couple of fig newtons and drank some gatorade while waiting for the awards.

Event comments:

They had the coolest awards for the overall winners, Arrows made by one of the native-american interpreters, napped stone arrowheads, turkey feather fletching, really cool

Overall: 25/87
Performance: Good
Course: Started off on a fairly long downhill on mixed pavement, gravel, and dirt roadbed, hit the first singletrack and the firstclimb at the bottom of the hill. Desite having a lot of rain earlier in the week, the trails were pretty stable, only limited spots of spooge. The course went along the Roanoke River for a while and was fairly flat after the first little climb, then it wound through the park attractions (18th century village) and began a climb back to the 5k finish and the 10k split. After the 10k split off from the 5k, the trail turned into all singletrack (albeit wide-ish) for the final 10k.
