I think Scout and FishrCutB8 hit upon it, its the rewards system in our culture, that rewards team sports like football, basketball, baseball, etc. rather than track and field.

pfft.  I had input, too, dammit.  Why you gotta hate?

I think it largely depends on your definition of reward.  Growing up who didn't want to be an astronaut?  Or as smart as a rocket scientist?

One could argue that these are both very respected professions in society.  To me that is a HUGE reward.

Well if your talking monetary rewards, 70,000 people pay $100 a pop, 8 times a year to see the pro quarter back throw his passes.  There are also insane tv contracts meaning pro football takes in billions of dollars a year.  Nerds spend billions of dollars a year just getting the space shuttle to fly, and produce no revenue as a result of the trips.  We are not paid based on merit but rather how much money we can bring in.

FWIW, I lived about 15 miles south of the shuttle launch pads in the early/mid 80's when there was a mission taking off every few months. I got to watch the first night shot from the beach behind my apartment.

A shuttle launch is the single most inspirational/incredible thing I have ever witnessed*. It is impossible to describe, seeing a picture or a video doesn't come close to the actual experience.

If you ever have the slightest opportunity to see a shuttle launch, take it.

* Edit: except the birth of my oldest daughter.

No offense, 'cause I'ma geek and I love space exploration, but nothing beats watching Big Papi's HR against the Yanks in the 2004 ALCS. Nuff Said.

p.s. try playing rugby for 90 minutes, or hockey and tell me those don't require end.

I lovvvvvvve triathlons. But team sports will always reign supreme in the US because they speak to our love of comraderie and how we can become greater than ourselves through acting with others.

I'll take the TD pass.

Spokes, what's up with the avatar?  You look like you're talking to a 9 year old.
