Blasphemy!  I refuse to learn from anyone elses mistakes.  I want to make the same mistakes.  Now, where did I put that corkscrew and pliers?  I have a certain toenail that's been a little cocky lately.

No matter how small it is..  or how much you think it won't hurt because the little claw like nub has almost fallen off anyway...  take it from me  DON'T pull it off..  i hurts like h3ll..  i can't wear dress shoes at work and i want to cry when i run..  and it throbs all day in regular Merell Mocs...

you can learn from my mistakes instead of making them on your own

You coulda asked me, I woulda told you it's a bad idea.  I've lost my big toenail twice... first time when it got close I pulled it off.  After 10 minutes of thrashing around and sobbing I was able to pick myself up off the ground.  Needless to say I wrapped it the second time and waited for nature to take its course.

Thanks. I'll file that advice right alongside not jabbing forks in my eyes or nails in my ears.

x2

Did not know the protocol on this, as I've not had this problem yet (not up to that kind of mileage) but I am keeping this mental image as a reminder......

I learned that lesson the hard way, too.  I covered the top of my toe with moleskin for awhile and that made it hurt a little bit less.  It at least makes it easier when wearing socks.

Weenie......

actually

Impatient weenie........

A toenail that has given up the ghost is really similar to the childhood loose tooth. It'll come off relatively pain-free and bloodlessly WHEN it's ready and NOT BEFORE

I only have seven toenails (actually, they're coming back nicely...but they're doomed)

OH MY! Yea, thanks for the heads up. Won't ever do it.

On a side note... WHY do athletes lose toenails? I really don't understand it.

I tend to lose toenails when I up my run mileage, my toes get repeatedly banged around inside my shoes, they essentially get a bruise under the toenail hich causes the nail to eventually turn loose of the nail bed as a replacement nail grows in underneath (similar to what happens when you hit your thumb while driving a (carpentry) nail

Happened to me when my toenails where too long and got caught in my sock so they got pulled up.  Eventually, I got a big bruise at the base of the nail and that caused my toenail to fall off.

The middle toenail on one foot has been rather dark since mid December when I was ramping up for a Marathon. It's gotten a bit worse and I've been waiting to see what happens.

Doesn't really hurt for now, and hasn't slowed me down.

I'll resist the urge to pull it off.

Thanks for the thread.  I jamed my big toe while skiing and the nail is all purple and gross.  I was not sure what to do with it so i will just wait until is falls off.  I don't have the guts to do anything else with it.

This place gives such good info. I'm not sure how I've managed but I'm still a lost toenail virgin after many years of athletics - this is all about to change though. Left biggie is going soon. I'm a little scared it's gonna hurt to wear shoes and all after it goes though so have been a wuss and have been wrapping it. Now I know not to pull it off ahead of time at least - and the moleskin thing is a great idea after it goes I guess. Any other to do/not to do suggestions?

As much as I know its gonna hurt I still do it.  Now, once I see my nail is bruised I take  a hot needle and drain the blood out.  That seems to allow me to keep my nail in tact.  Its not for the weak though.  I have to get myself all composed before I do it.  Its pretty gross.

Once it turns black, just pull it off. Happens to me every summer (little toe, right foot, if anyone is concerned)..

2 biggest contributing factors- Shoe's are too small and poor form. I'm guilty of both. When you run, a lot, your feet actually will get a bit longer, so that size 10, maybe you need a 10.5. I've gone from a 10 to an 11 over the last few years. Fear not, it will stop, it's not likje you will end up looking like Frodo Baggins. The form factor is you land too far foerward, causing your foot to jam into the front of the show. That also slows you down. Remember, high turnover, land beneath your body. No overstriding .
