Note to Azalea participants...run course has changed.

It looks to be for the better, and the run route looks like it should come very close to the bike route on Hamilton, making spectating even better. Viewers will be able to see both laps of the bike, and out and back on the run (and maybe swim exit from the natatorium) from one place on Hamilton.

Very nice!

I had to laugh when I read the Setup website stating the run course was better in part because of fewer turns. Don't know about the rest of you but I can run a corner at darn near full speed, its the bike at 21 mph that gets a little hairy in the hairpins.

*snicker*

I don't think that's what they mean, exactly. From what I've heard the previous route was 40 feet this way ... then 60 feet that way ... then this way ... then that way ... I'll have to go look at the new route.

yep, that's exactly how it was, especially coming right out of T2. I remember telling other runners where to turn last year during the route, as they seemed lost...just like I was!

See you all there.

Check the setup website. The bike course has received an emergency change. Its now one loop instead of two. Looks like there may be fewer turns also. They have also made some changes to the transition area and the parking situation. Seems the right hand didn't know what the left hand was doing at UNCW.

Did you notice the mileage on the map? It now says 10 miles. Looks like we lost 2.5 miles with the new course.

Yep, not quite sure how I feel about that. The event was already pretty short. Bet next year there will be a new venue. It sounds like the UNCW group is hard to work with.

This race seems to be a big challenge for Bill ... I, of course, will not be complaining about the shortened race as I'm just praying I'll get through it.

I got all pumped up to defend my school, I changed my picture... But I got nothin'. That sucks. Be careful on Eastwood and Wrightsville Ave. I'll be there to cheer you guys on. If it is still at UNCW next year, I want to do this one.

Traffic or pavement problems?

Traffic. It has been a few years, but if the weather is nice Eastwood should be busy. Wrightsville is busy, but now that you mention it, pavement could be rough. It was a road I avoided in my car. Also, there are of course speed bumps on campus, but I think they have them on McMillan now.

If Wilmington Police can make the YMCA Tri safe, they should do fine on this one.

I mapped the previous bike course, and I couldn't get 11 miles out of it, so although it is shorter, I don't think we got rid of 2.5 miles, maybe 1 mile.

Here's the scoop on the bike course, i drove it last night.
I like it! The first half of it is the same as the old course, complete with speed bumps. The difference is at Clear Run where you used to take a left and head back to the college, you take a right and head out towards Eastwood Rd. Eastwood is a slight downhill, traffic should not be a problem because I'm sure that they will have the right lane closed. Rogersville is not bad, Wrightsville Ave will be the interesting part. I doubt they can close that road to traffic, and it is a fairly busy road on the weekends. The last 1/2 of the course has less turns than the old one, and the old course was never 12 miles anyway.
From what I've heard, this race is going to be swapped with MAP, that will put it earlier in March and maybe no more scheduling conflicts with UNCW.

Thanks for the update. Traffic isn't as bad as torn up pavement. Glad to hear there are fewer turns!!

It's always been touted as 12.43 miles, but I just plotted it on BT's route program, and it comes up at 10.63 miles total.  The new route shows as 10.09.  I always thought it was short (I think it showed 11.2 on my odometer last year)

Glad to hear that it was shorter than advertised last year. In looking at the bike times, they were incredibly fast if it was a true 12 miles. I feel a little better now.

weather.com shows Saturday morning to be 60-65F at race start time, winds from the East or Southeast at 4mph, no precip in the forecast for the morning.  Headwind on Eastwood, crosswind on Wrightsville with a slight tailwind at the end.

Yep, that pretty much matches what I plotted on BT's route mapper.
