SETUP INC

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 09m 50s
Overall Rank = 94/332
Age Group = 51-54
Age Group Rank = 5/13
Pre-race routine:

drove down, found the place, and parked across from the Aquatic Center. it was chilly at 7:30, but by 9:00 it was perfect weather! talked with the other W-S folks and met some other nice people at my rack.
Event warmup:

checked out the ins and outs of the TA. rode for about 10min and ran about 10 min. swim a few yards in the warmup lane. basically was taking it ez and did a lot of talking the entire time. should have checked out the second half of the run course.
Swim
  • 08m 7s
  • 500 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

I hate pool swims. I intentionally put a slower time than normal so I wouldn't be forced to rush, but I really took this too ez. I passed a few swimmers early, then some faster guy swam beside me for 100 yards and finally passed me. I had some really BAD turns where I lost some time and at the very end, 5 or so of us were bunched up trying to get out of the pool with the same ladder.
What would you do differently?:

submit a bit faster swim time and push it more.
Transition 1
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

not bad for the first T1 of the year, but lost some time fumbling with my socks. and I was too nice at the mount line - I let others go ahead of me. geeezzzz...
What would you do differently?:

be more aggressive!
Bike
  • 36m 4s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.68 mile/hr
Comments:

good solid effort for my first race. I did get stuck behind some folks that weren't as fearless as I on turns so I lost some time there. again lost some time being nice following instead of passing on the last hill and on the entry of the T2. geeeezzzz...
What would you do differently?:

be more aggressive!
Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

why this took so long I don't know... maybe cause my rack was so far away from the bike end/run start.
What would you do differently?:

nothing.
Run
  • 22m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 08s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt damn good coming off the bike and the first part of the run was down a little hill. after the first lap, I was beginning to get tired. here is where I wish I knew the course. I lost some time following slower runners up the 2nd lap hill and out to the run around the Center. again, I was following and not leading... geeezzzz.
What would you do differently?:

know the course and be more aggressive!
Post race
Warm down:

recoverd fast, grabbed some water and found my friends. checked the results. cleaned out my TA and headed on home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

well, I went into this with the 'have fun' attitude and I cetainly did have fun! goal accomplished. looking back at the results, I could have taken 3rd place - we were 25 seconds apart. 4th place was only 2 seconds ahead of me!

oh yeah, my cold screwed up w/o's the 2 weeks before this event.

Event comments:

this is a great race to kick-start the season. I can do much better next year by knowing the course. post race could have been better.

I did had fun!

Averaging over 20 mph!! I would say that's a good way to start out the year.

Kicking race, WakeMan.  Personally, I'm very happy you're not in my age group.

I think I've asked you this before, but are you associated with Wake?  I see you're in W-S.  I graduated from there in 96.
