Pre-race routine:

Not much other then get up, load up, drive to Keller, unload, and setup the transistion. Oh yeah - FROZE
Swim
  • 54m 42s
  • 300 meters
  • 18m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

Took off in the pool with ease. By the first 100 meters I was passing the person in front of me. It took about 25 meters to finally make the pass. After that I started to fatigue. I begin breathing one sided on every stroke. Not something I normally do. The last 50 meters I think I passed another 3.
What would you do differently?:

Paid stricter attention to my form.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Once outside the cold hit OMG!! But that lasted all of about 10 seconds. Once at the bike I got dressed quickly and headed out. Mounting the bike was disastorous. My legs just would not respond. The first attempt my foot slipped off. Second attempt I got on, but my foot slipped again. That was followed up with me running into the fence. Lovely. I finally got on and headed out. The shoes continued to give me trouble. Oh and did I mention I could not get my shirt all the way on, so I just left it until I was out on the bike course
What would you do differently?:

Work on the running mount WITH wet feet.
Bike
  • 36m 52s
  • 12 miles
  • 19.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Once I got started and finally got my shirt adjusted the bike went well. I felt like I was going great. I was +20mph almost the whole time. I was really suprised that both my GPS and my bike showed an average of over 20mph, but the race says I did 19.5. My stuff showed the distance at well over 12 miles....
What would you do differently?:

Not much I really could have done differently - except train harder.
Transition 2
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

I thought my T2 went well. No mistakes and everything went on as well as could be expected. See, by this time I could not feel my toes. They were frozen numb.
Run
  • 25m
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 02s  min/mile
Comments:

My first time doing a brick this year. It took me nearly a mile and a half before I started getting feelings back in my toes. The way out was rough on me having not done a brick yet. But on the way back I started warming and loosening up .
What would you do differently?:

Not wait until race day to do a brick

Super race today Kirk!  Your bike was really fast!  sorry about the fence.  I had similar problems clipping in too.

glad you came back to the house with your daughter.  See you again soon

Wahoo - race #1 under the belt! Way to go! Sorry to hear about the minor mishaps and the chilly temps Overall it was a very solid race, though. Good work!

We should start a club... the "I think I'll wait until my first race to do a brick" club

GREAT job! Congrats!!

Great race.  #5 in your age group is impressive.

But your reported 54 minutes for 300 yards suggests that you pretty much walked the whole swim, and slowly at that!

Great job Kurt!  You actually DID go faster than 19.5.  Andy and Shannon said that the course was more like 12.68 miles.  Great meeting you guys!

Hey Kirk,

Awesome race! I was only a few minutes off.....and, I can't believe how cold it was. That would kill me. I hope you didn't suffer any ill effects - how's the leg feel?

Good job!

Great job!

Yea, it was cold this morning. I was happy to NOT be wet and riding a bike!

So you did a tri... then went out and rode some more? Talk about hardcore.

Nice work!  Considering you have no bricks under your belt to date this year, that's still a good time!

May want to modify that swim split though .... 54 minutes is a long time to be in the pool ....

More often than not, Triathons are an exercise in dealing with the unexpected and continuing on.

Great job out there this weekend and Solid performance.

That is funny that this race is your first Brick Workout

I found that Bricks helped a ton with the Marathon. It allowed me to take pitstops (Bio-Break) late in the race without fear of totally locking up when I tried to run again.

I suspect that as the season progresses, your times will get much faster
