Subject: Bike fit - How much and how often?
I'm about to enter my second triathlon season. I bought a new road bike last year, and had it fit when I bought it. I've lost about 15 lbs since that fit, and I think my flexibility & core strenght are probably better now than they were a year ago as well. I'm wondering if I should have another fit done now, and was wondering from you more experienced tri folks:

1) How often do you have your bike fit?
2) What's the going rate? I saw one a local bike shop's web-site listing a fit at $250 - which seemed a little steep to me, but maybe that's the going rate... I'm curious what other folks pay...

Honestly, I would be surprised if there would be much difference at all between your fit now and 15 lbs ago.  Even though you've gained flexibility I doubt that much has changed.  If you're able to describe a specific problem you're having with your current fit then maybe we would have a better recommendation.  Personally I wouldn't re-fit the bike unless you're having a problem.

Most full service fits cost between $150 and $250 depending on how detailed they get.  If they use all the gadgets (lasers, line-levels, power meter, etc) then they do tend to run $200+.

No sure about the how often but in dallas a bike fit is less than $75 for an aero fit.

I have attached a link to a bike shop in Dallas with their prices but they probably vary from where you are.

The $75 fit offered by the bike shop you linked to is a very basic fit, one which I could do in my garage in about 5 minutes.

Even the $150 fit from that shop doesn't cover nearly all of the details a lot of shops offer in complete fits.  Shops around here use lasers to track the knee glide, heel movement etc.  They use power meters to gauge how much power you're applying at different fit points.  There's more I can't recall at the moment.

The point is.  You can pay $50 for a stand-over, saddle height fit or upwards of $250 for an all-out fit.  Depends one how important it is to you.

Personally I paid full-boat for a fit on both my road bike AND tri bike.  I did however get a discount since I purchased the bikes from the shop where I got fit.

Also, make sure the person doing the fit is Certified.  The people at my local shops pay big money to go through specific Fit schools to receive certification.

I'm getting a tri fit done this weekend. Two hour fit for $100. Thought that was a pretty good price.

I paid around $200. IT helped so much! That was 3 years ago. I had major ITB problems. After the fit I was able to do long rides again. If your hurting on your long rides then go to a place that can help you. If not don' worry about it. Loseing weight will not change your fit. I gain about 5-10 lb in the off season and my bike fits me the same when that weight comes off. hope this helps.

Thanks,

It's helpful to know that a more techical fit costs that much. I just think the fit I got when I bought my bike was pretty basic. I'm not having any particular problems, but I wonder if there is anything to be gained (speed or power-wise) by having a more precise fit done. I was also contemplating adding a fast forward or similar seat post to get into a little more aero position, but I'm not really sure whether that would be helpful or not.

I'm sure I can gain a lot more speed/power by working on the engine at this point than I can gain from a $250 bike fit, though

If you are planning on making significant changes such as setting up your road bike for triathlon use (e.g. adding aerobars, changing the seatpost to a FF, etc) then it would be a good idea to get a refit.   I'm guessing that you were originally fit to ride in the regular road position where you are more upright.  Changing to a more aero position will require some position changes.   If this is the route you are considering it would be beneficial to get a more detailed fit.
