Subject: What is a crutch

Wikipedia defines crutch as : can also refer to anything used by a person as a psychological or emotional prop.

At least that is one of the definitons.  So is running my crutch since it seems that I am only happy when I run.  I have not taken a serious running step since October.  Nov.  my gf broke up with me.  Been in the dumps since.  Starting to feel myself coming out of the dumps but thats because I think it is getting warmer and I am getting a slight urge to lace ' em up again.  So my question is can running be my crutch?

Running has a positive effect on my mood.  Not running has a negative one.  My wife has pointed this fact out numerous occasions.

In that sense, sure, it can be a crutch, especially if your mood becomes dependent on you running.

For me, it affects a lot of areas.  I don't sleep as well, I feel much more irritable, and I'm way more wound up (I need physical activity as a way to help mitigate ADD).

I'd say that so long as it doesn't become a compulsive behavior that has negative impacts on other parts of your life, then I'd think of your running as a positive "tool" instead of a negative "crutch".

I went through a divorce several years ago and think that the training I was doing for a 1/2 marathon was about the only thing that kept me sane.

Training wheels on a Tri bike is a crutch.  But how do I just take them off?  Won't  I fall over?

Running can be a crutch, and a healthy one at that. Many things can be a crutch. I can think of many that use BT as a crutch.
