MELBOURNE, Australia -- Chloe Sutton emerged from the water a trembling, teary mess, wondering what happened to her goggles. Angela Maurer buried her head in a coach's chest, knowing what it must have felt like to go 12 rounds with Mike Tyson in his prime. And everyone was covered in ugly, red welts, the work of jellyfish lurking off St. Kilda Beach.

A look at Eva Berglund of Australia shows how jellyfish took their toll on the women's 10K open water race at the swimming world championships.

Oh well, just another day of open water swimming.

I don't have to worry about jelly fish, or sharks, but big huge nasty filthy carp.  They could swallow a person whole!

Listen, here... Little Miss Sunshine.  It's not nice to post stories like this!

When you post shark stories, I get to gleefully snicker at the 'fraidy cats that have an irrational fear of sharks. I mean, when was the last time someone was biten by a shark in Lake San Antonio?

But jelly fish!  That's going too far!  I'm scared of them.  Actually... "terrified" is the right word.

And don't  mention sea snakes.  *shiver*

crossing off all ocean swims for the foreseeable future...

I shouldn't have read this thread. My first tri this season is in Tampa Bay which folks keep telling me isn't the ocean but crap ocean water is there..with all those yucky things in it.

Part of doing St. A's is helping me get over the ocean swim thing I have...only done 880 yds in ocean...super motivation to move quickly!

We've been seeing HUNDREDS washed up on the N FL shores lately - at low tide, you can see the survivors rolling like slow catherine's wheels under the surf.

Luckily, these have been Cannonball jellyfish; their venom is harmless to humans. It doesn't really help tho - I still get freaked out when one floofs past my stomach . . .

Maybe meat tenderizer should be in ye olde bag at the transition area?
