Overall Rank = 27/300
Age Group = M20-24
Age Group Rank = 5/29
Pre-race routine:

I woke up and ate breakfast at the hotel. Bagels and dry cereal and gatorade. I got all my stuff together, then I woke Cait up and we went to the race site. The drive was easy but when we got there they parked us in outer Mongolia and I had to haul to the transition to get my packet, race chip, etc.
Event warmup:

because we parked over a mile away, I didn't have time to do a swim warmup, but the bike to the packet pickup might count.
Swim
  • 09m 35s
  • 530 meters
  • 01m 49s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had a pretty good swim for me. This was definitely my fastest pace in a triathlon. The wetsuit helped a great deal. Unfortunately I went out a little too fast. If I had watched my pace a little better, I could have knocked another 30 secs off.
What would you do differently?:

Take the first 200m slower.
Transition 1
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

I had a hard time getting out of the wetsuit. I had tried it at the pool w/o success and this was no different. I had already prepared myself for a slower transition than normal, but the speed I gained by wearing the wetsuit completely offsets the time in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Work on wetsuit removal technique.
Bike
  • 44m 54s
  • 16 miles
  • 21.38 mile/hr
Comments:

This was fairly disappointing. I have been working hard on the bike for months now, and my time does not reflect that. My back hurt nearly the whole race, so I couldn't get aero nearly as much as I should have, and a few times I had to sit up completely off the handlebars just to ease the pain.

That being said, I still rode hard and had a pretty decent time. It was just frustrating to know that I could have knocked 2min off my bike split had I been healthy. Again, I am still pleased with my performance. I am just left with a bunch of what-if's...
What would you do differently?:

Go to a chiro about 3 months ago.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

I was sprinting towards the line once I got by the park entrance b/c I can do that w/o my back hurting, so I totally forgot to take my feet out, but this was still blazing fast considering that and the fact that my bike rack was at the far end of the transition and the bike in/run out were really far away.
What would you do differently?:

nada
Run
  • 21m 48s
  • 3.2 miles
  • 06m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran pretty hard and left most of it on the course, but I haven't been running enough for this to be that fast.

Once I got out of transition I was mostly alone on the course. I passed two people the whole time (both right after transition) and only saw two other people the entire course. It was slightly eery and lonely. One of the two guys that passed my was the guy who finished right ahead of me in my age group. He ran a 19:42, so there was no way I could have held him off. I didn't really care, cause he looked like Achilles and I knew I wasn't in the running for an age group placing. I outsprinted this guy who ran up next to me at the end, and then walked around for a while.

Hopefully by July I can get down to the 20 flat range.
What would you do differently?:

Post race
Warm down:

I didn't really have time for a warm-down b/c we had to go and check out of the hotel.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injuries and b/c of that, inconsistent training.

Event comments:

Very well organized race. I would definitely recommend this race to anyone.
