Pre-race routine:

Met up with some friends to drive down to the Brookhaven Marta station. Rode the train down to the stop just befor Five Points, when the train broken down.

Mass exodus off the train led to overcorwding on the escalator, which then broken down and started to go in reverse. Saw the crowd teeter on mass panic ... but then settled down.

Bummer for MARTA as I am sure this is one of the few times folks got a chance to experience them ... and we all know how gross the ride home on MARTA is after a race :)
Event warmup:

Urinated in the bushes ... along with 5000+ other friends (the other 10,000 was waiting in the port-o-let line).
Run

Comments:

The start was crowded to say the least. There were no corals, just wall to wall people lined up for city blocks. Took a full 12-15 minutes to reach the timing mat.

The crowd did not disperse for quite some time and had to spend a considerable amount of time duck and weaving to keep pace.

Glad that I ran with a bottle because the water stops were a mess. Thank goodness for the "bandit stops" where folks were giving out bottles of water. (Also for the folks that handed out shots of Pabst Blue Ribbon ... amazing how good a shot of beer taste at 9:00 am on a Sunday morning when you are in the middle of a race!)

M13 8:03 178 (Hit 190 bpm on the false flat at the beginning of this mile/crossing over the Downtown Connector)
What would you do differently?:

Stick to my HR zones, stick to my HR zones, stick to my HR zones. Sure I negative split the second half (and hit my HR max on that last mile), but am feeling the effects of it.
Post race
Warm down:

Ice, ice baby ... went to the med tent to get a bag of ice to immediately rub down the shin.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My taper ... did 80+ miles yesterday afternoon on the bike through rolling hills and finished that with legs that felt semi-trashed. Also shin splints prohibited me from logging running miles over the past two weeks.

Event comments:

Great inaugural race even though there are a couple things the race organization needs to iron out:

- Mile markers?
- Cones for road hazards (those white round traffic control things? Saw a lad take a header after tripping on one ... course was so crowded she couldn't see it)
- Water stations (Race Director, please see how the Peachtree Road Race handles water stops efficiently and effectively for 5x the amount of runners)
- Course nutrition - one gel station for the entire course?
- Post race activities = not so much ... the city had the opportunity to get tens of thousands of people downtown, they should have taken advantage of the opportunity to show case that Underground Atlanta and Woodruff Park are places people should come down to from the suburbs and after sporting events (Braves games, Georgia Dome and so forth).

Next year if you take it easy on me I'll try to run with you at that pace.  Nice work.  Your comments on how they could improve are on the money! I'm trying to figure out whether to try the full next year.  All the hills would be a nice early season test.

Thanks Brian! Great race yourself! Especially after an 80-mile ride yesterday AND you're nursing shin spints! Wow! Congrats!

80 miles on the bike the day before? Man, you are tough!

Way to go - Racing like that is no small feat in the middle of a taper.

Nice race- bummed I missed the pbr shots though! Your points were pretty spot on- maybe they will get it right next year. I think I am also paying the price for not sticking with the HR plan too. Good luck on the recovery!

I totally agree with your event comments.  The water stops were a mess!  I actually saw some people run in to a store to get some water on the full marathon course.  I was lucky to have been able to pour half a cup of water for myself.  On another Poweraid station, they were completely out.  How crazy is that?  Didn't they know 15000 people were running?  They definitely needed more volunteers and water!!!!!

Great race after an 80 mile bike.

I should have been looking harder for BT-ers because I was about the same pace for the first 9 miles (finished 2:06). The lady that took the spill on the "road pimples" was just in front of me and I jumped to the right in time to avoid her.

The PBR stop was good!

Nice race - you are definately hard-core doing an 80 miler the day before - geez! Your massive amounts of training are definately paying off!!

I agree with all your course comments, although I just heard about the water stop issues (I carry my own water/HEED). I was really surprised there were no corrals at the start, I think that really would have helped the chaos.

I'm glad others thought the hills were worse than expected - I just though I was a wuss!

Nice job, Brian! Sounds like you were onthe same escalator as Steve. It's a shame the race wasn't better organized, esp. since this is the same company that puts on the NY marathon. Hope it's better next year.

Nice run Brian!  Yes, mile markers and corals for 5,000+ runners would be nice.

Enjoy your well deserved rest day!

Good job on the race. I hope that going out of your training zone doesn't cause you issues with your IM training this week. I'm glad to see that your shin splint isn't keeping you down. Enjoy all the icing, and good luck at the IM.

80 miles on the day before? - A hot day at that.  That would have weighed on me mentally bigtime.   I guess you could look at it as awesome tri training. Congratulations on your race. I see your next door in Duluth.  A group of us are doing a century ride this Saturday out of Lawrenceville. Let me know if your interested.

 Great job on the run!
