Pre-race routine:

Got up around 5AM, got ready, green tea and PB & Honey Waffle breakfast, drove to Underground Atlanta Parking.
Event warmup:

Walked to the start - does that count?! :)
Run
  • 2h 27m 1s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 11m 13s  min/mile
Comments:

The first 7 miles were a blast - I had a great time running through the neighborhoods, past the groups of spectators cheering us on, just having a great run! At about 5 miles, my stomach starting to feel funny and I started looking for a restroom with a somewhat small line. At about 7 miles I gave up and stopped at the first one I could find. After waiting almost 5 minutes, I decided to run a little farther and found a bakery that let me use their restroom, but my stomach never felt better after that. My run slowed WAY down, in order to keep my stomach pain tolerable and I had to walk a few times. Around mile 10 or so, I found Elena and she was kind enough to help poor, grumpy me along to the finish! :) I didn't have a time goal for this race, but it was still disappointing to see the time slip away when the race started so great!
What would you do differently?:

I don't know - I didn't eat anything unusual all week, I can't figure out what caused my issues.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around, visited the portapotties, stretched.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach issues

Event comments:

I really liked the course - except that there were very few mile markers. I saw mile 1, mile 4, and then 1 mile to go - that's IT! I think they decided the marathon markers would be enough, but from other races I have done, I didn't know if they lined up. It was very frustrating not to have the course well marked - I was surprised, since this is not a new race organization. I think if they can fix this one thing next year, it will be a great race.

The spectators were fabulous - I was extremely impressed by the number of people out cheering - especially for a 1st year race in Atlanta!

Great job toughing it out and finishing the race. The spectators were pretty awesome. considering the bathroom waiting times and having to walk a few times you still put up a pretty respectable finishing time. Congrats on finishing a tough race!

Heather ... way to battle through the stomach issues in order to finish the race!  It is racing through adveristy such as this that creates the 'mental toughness' that others talk about.

Job well done!

Good job dealing with the stomach stuff and still finishing the race. I hope the issues were a one time thing and don't happen again. Congrats on dealing with it all.

You did a great job considering that you had to run with your stomach issues.  I know that was not comfortable.

With stomache issues being a common theme in racing, I wonder how many people faced the same problem at ING. Count me as one. I'm guessing, based on nothing, that the number is upwards of 20 percent at any given race.

Ok, that being said, good for you hanging in there. Every race is a lesson. Think you'll ever go for the full ING GA?
