Resident Curmudgeon 25290 The Road Back | Subject: Questions for USAT Officials? Janice (foolproof) and I are sitting through a certification clinic for USAT officials on Saturday in Galveston, so I'm asking if anyone has any rules questions or need for clarification. The one I plan on asking is about the rule that some race directors have that you have your helmet buckled when you unrack your bike. I don't see that anywhere in the USAT rules, so at the least I need to see if that is something USAT officials enforce, as well as any other RD rules that are in addition to the USAT. Any rules questions, BTers? |

Champion 10668 Tacoma, Washington | Subject: RE: Questions for USAT Officials? I'm no official, so I'm just shooting from the hip here... That's something I just do so that I DON'T get caught getting ON the bike with the chin strap unbuckled. Just avoids me forgetting when I get to the mount zone (which I know I will if I don't do it right away). So I think some RDs are just taking that and running with it. Not a bad idea to do it, though I don't know about making it a DQ-able offense... |

Pro 3705 Vestavia Hills | Subject: RE: Questions for USAT Officials? John: Glad to see that you and Janice are doing the clinic ... watching a race unfold from an officials perspective opens up a completely different viewpoint while affording a chance to give back to the sport. The one thing that I would ask for clarificaiton on is the definition of "failure to pass" (e.g. entering the draft zone and not passing within 15 seconds) ... it's a stickler.

Champion 6627 Rochester Hills, Michigan | Subject: RE: Questions for USAT Officials? Ask 'em what it's going to take to make drafing a DQ'able offense first time caught. It's dangerous (riding in packs in the aero), yields the most time benefit, yet carries a similar penalty to 'bar end plug missing' or 'trimming your race number'. Rediculous. Not that you're there to CHANGE the rules, just interpret 'em. Maybe ask about the race number modification thing....can you trim your race number to fit your bike's shape/seatpost, as long as it's 'minor' and doesn't cut any part of the number? |

Instead of on motorcycles, do they have anyone standing there at certain points on the course taking note? what if my number's made out of cheap paper, it falls off of my bike and I get penalized for no number?

Veteran 161 West Chester, OH | Subject: RE: Questions for USAT Officials? I got a flat during a race last weekend; my second tri ever. I pulled off the road, dismounted and my first impulse was to remove my helmet before commencing with the repair. I immediately flinched at the thought of a possible DQ so I kept it on throughout. I know the "helmet rule" seems to be the number one question when it comes to nitpickish rules...find out about that one if you can. Looking forward to hearing your report...

Yeah, that relates to my question as well, IMHO I see nothing in the letter or the spirit of the rules that indicates you cannot unbuckle your chinstrap and/or remove your helmet if you are off the bike. Some race directors (Keith Jordan at the upcoming Lonestar, for example, where my clinic is to take place) have a rule that says the chinstrap must be buckled before the bike is off the rack. My question would also be if USAT officials are supposed to enforce race directors' rules where they are more stringent than USAT's. |

Champion 8903 | Subject: RE: Questions for USAT Officials? And in defense of Keith, who is one of the best race directors around, I'm betting he does that to insure that no competitors in his races get hit with a "chinstrap penalty" or even come close to being subject to a marginal call. You're going to be wearing your helmet for a long period of time anyway, a few more seconds is no big deal. I like the rule about having it clipped before the bike comes off the rack and unclipping after it goes on.

That's all very good, I can't even see the practicality of trying to fasten your chinstrap after taking the bike off the rack, just not enough hands. But again my primary question is does a USAT official have the responsibility and authority to enforce a non-USAT rule, if indeed that is what this is? |

I was going to wear it at IMFL, at least under my wetsuit (I would have stripped the wetsuit off on the beach, and then ran in to the transition tent with it on), but it came in after I left. But if I had worn it, would it have violated the nudity rule? (seriously...I'd like to wear it at some point in the future) |

Don't you have a teenage son? Jim, the Borat suit covers more than some of the banana hammocks I've seen worn in triathlons. Crystal Lake, IL | Subject: RE: Questions for USAT Officials? I don't want to hijack this thread with a whole music/no music argument - but here goes. If no music is the rule, will they be enforcing it? If not, why bother having it as a rule? This isn't like drafting where sometimes there just isn't an official around. Nobody who's using a music player hides it. Again, not debating whether it should be a rule or not, just asking why it isn't enforced, at least at the few events I've been too. Also - where are we at on the "no sh irts for men" rule? Just curious.

Running races, not so much. The mandatory torso coverage was a proposal that died in committee, never was a rule. |

If you have to have your helmet on before you take the bike off the rack then I have not finished a triathlon and maybe never will. I should been DQed both races since my bike does not fit on the rack. I use a kick stand. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/show-album.asp?... |

Pro 3705 Vestavia Hills | Subject: RE: Questions for USAT Officials? For each of the races I have helped to officiate, we have ridden the run the course to look for headphones ... and of the four races I volunteered at last year I did not see a single triathlete wearing headphones. At the certification clinic I attended Charlies Crawford, the Commissioner of Officials, did describe one guy at the Gulf Coast H-IM who taped computer speakers to his handle bars ... which he described as ridiculous but legal. the bear - 2007-03-27 10:43 AM hangloose - 2007-03-27 9:11 AM I don't want to hijack this thread with a whole music/no music argument - but here goes.
