Depends on the distance.  5K over 100 miles is not hilly.  5K over 30 miles is

The HIM I am doing this weekend has about 2600 over 56.  I'd say not hilly.

IMLP Has something like 8000 over 112.  I'd say getting hilly

To me, hilly would be averaging 1000 feet of climbing per 10 miles not that I could always finish it

Here, this is BARELY a bump.

Hills like that make me terrified of trying for an Escape from Alcatraz spot!

I think it is all relative to what you normally do.

I had a friend (who lived in the same town) who asked me during a ride if I even knew how to spell downhill because he was convinced I didn't know what it meant and I thought we were on a fairly basic, flat ride.

I think my regular route is hilly. 2321 ft over 20 miles. Thanks for posting this, I was curious if what I thought was hilly was wimpy or not. I'd like to think it's hilly, but some more experienced riders might think those are baby hills (even if I have to use the granny gear!)

Edited to add: My runs average about 1100-1300 ft of ascent over 7-8 miles right around my neighborhood. The benefit I guess of living in the foothills of the blueridge mtns.

There's really only one of THOSE on the course. It's hilly, but only teh climb up from Seal Rock is scary. Actually it wasn't scary. By the time I got to it, I looked around and started laughing. I thought to myself, now THIS is San Fransisco! I actually passed a few people on the last part of the climb at the very top.

I'd have to agree with the comment "It depends on how long the ride is".    I voted for 1000 ft because most my rides are around 15-20 miles.   I feel like I've done some hills if I hit 1000ft in a 60-90 minute ride.

Now if you are going to call it a hill climb, then 75-85% of the ride should be uphill, mostly continously.

I just did my first hilly ride in years; 2300 ft climbing over 12-13 miles.  I thought that was hilly.

Anything is a hilly ride when you suck as bad as me.

Are you guys figuring out elevation from Googlemaps or something?

I live at 8500 feet in the mountains of Colorado.  Hilly is when there is NO flat land ANYWHERE!

Anything is a hill around here.  My 14 mile "ride around the block" has 120 or so feet of elevation gain.  My 5k run that I do from home periodically has 17 feet of elevation gain.      I voted for 1000' though.

How bout something like this.  The Triple Bypass Ride in Colorado.  I did this a couple of years ago and it was a killer, but the downhills rocked.

Anytime I am in my smallest gear, out of the saddle and my cyclometer is registering under 5 mph....that is a hill!

I have a local hill on the blue ridge parkway (haven't done it yet this year) that climbs around 3000 feet in 11 miles. It is actually not super steep, it just goes on FOREVER!!!! It is a good test of fitness though.

Just did the rout tracker on this one and it said it is 3581 feet in 12.27 miles!

Harriman State Park. My local training ground and site of the 5/19 HIM that me and a few other Bt'ers are doing.

"The bike course is a difficult 14-mile loop course with 1,500 total feet of elevation gain/loss per lap. " From the Rd. and he aint lyin

By the fourth loop you wonder why you didn't just do the mini (2 loops)

The elevation for the Wildflower Oly:

Not impossibly hilly, but it's not a piece of cake either.  Plus, none of the hills are "rollers" so you can't use the downhills to help you up the next uphill.  Lots of false tops and gradual climbs.

Also, please note the nearly 350" of climbing in the first 3/4 mile.

Funny.  I was thinking that this past weekend riding the Wildflower Oly course.  Some of the hills had me in my smallest gear and barely keeping 4-5 mph, at whatever rpm I could hold and not fall over (usually around 45-50).  While others, although longer, were shallower, and even though I was in my smallest gear, I was still holding >70 rpm, so I didn't really consider it a "hill"... but more of an "up-kick".
