kristinc0916 - 2007-03-28 10:48 AM OMG! Im training for Escape from Alcatraz - please tell me that's either 1. not part of that race 2. somehow computer altered to change the grade!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's not part of that race - if you can't tell it's a straight cycle race.  (Cyclists like to bike up the side of a mountain and call it a moderate grade.)  There are a couple of hills on Escape from Alcatraz though - I'd suggest you better train on some hills if you want to do well.

Thats good to know - we've got what I thought were hills here but they're just little ant hills compared to those. I'll just start doing more repeats. . ..

My vote goes to the Porcupine Hill Climb in Salt Lake City. It starts at the Porcupine Pub at the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon and ends at Brighton Ski Resort. 14 miles of continuous UP with an elevation gain around 5,000'. Nearly 2 hours of low gear and standing to grind a blistering 7mph.
I found I didn't impress anyone by telling them I made it under my goal time because they would look at me and say "What the HELL did you do that for?!?!?!" "Are you crazy????" Yes. I must be.

My goal is to do the Triple Bypass next year. It's a charity ride, not a race, but the challenge is to just finish it.

It's a great ride.  Really well put together.  I'm looking at it again in 2 years for my 40th Birthday.  Next year, I am thinking of the Seattle to Portland ride.  200 miles, but I think like 800 feet of total elevation gain.  Not so much climbing.

I have to content myself with the lowly Gatineau Hills in my area.  There is one cycle route along the Promenade de la Gatineau that is somewhat challenging.  It has a 10 km portion of this route that rises to a height of 332 meters.  It is a ballbreaker (to me anyways) and I must admit that I do prefer the descente.
