Subject: Who's using Beginner 1/2 Ironman Training Plan?
Just curious who is using the 1/2 Ironman Training Plan from this site. I've been using it for 3 weeks in prep for Vineman 70.3 (7/22/2007). What are the strengths of this plan? Weaknesses? Are you finding you have to modify the plan? Also interested to hear from those who have used the plan and the end results ..... how was your race? What would you have done differently?

I'm using the plan for Vineman HIM also, so I really just started same as you.  I'm having to modify it some due to recovering from some tendonitis in my legs.  I'm also interested to hear what those who have used the plan have to say about it.

I am as well - for Vineman also.  Yes, I modify it (more like blow out workouts).  I'm not a real strong "work out 6 days a week" kinda guy, and I'm trying to build some longer rides in on the weekend (have a local century) in about 3 weeks so some of the Monday workouts get skipped.

This is only the second time I have "worked off a plan".  My first was for my first marathon, and that worked well for me - plus it's fun to be able to "check off" each workout as you do them.

Interestingly enough, even though I have skipped a few workouts, my overall training time is way over the planned...  Go figure.

Good luck, see you all on race day!!!

holy cow, is it that time already!!  I have a HIM on 7/22/07... I guess I should be looking at this, ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!

Thanks!!  I was thinking of using the beginner one on there as well.  This is my first 1/2 (and well may very well be my first tri )... and I don't really know of another plan... so I hope this is good!!!!

I used it for my first half IM two years ago.  For me the plan had too little riding and too much running time. I could have used some longer rides - as I recall the longest ride was three hours, so I had only gone 56 miles once going into race day. My legs were pretty cooked when I got to the run and it was a major struggle to finish that run, even though I had done multiple 14-16 mile runs in training. If I was following that plan again, I would modify it to build up to several four hour (or more) rides. By the time I did my second half IM last spring (nine months after the first one), I had done multiple 80+ mile rides, and the run was much better.

A good plan overall, just ride more than it suggests.

Myself and another BT'er had the same thought about the long rides.  We're going to work in a couple of extra 4+ hour rides during the meat of the plan in preparation for Racine.  I'm using a modified version of the plan to account for some running races as well.

I used it for my first HIM after my surgery and I went 5:12.14.

I think it's a great overall plan.  I agree with others in regards to a bit more longer bike sessions.  The only thing I really changed was that I went to Masters swim instead of doing some of the prescribed workouts.  Kept the swim day the same, just went to Masters instead.

I used it last year on my first HIM.  It got me a 6h finish which is exactly where I thought I would be.  I was really undertrained on the run so I missed a few of the final long runs and that did me in during the race.  I didn't have an issue with the bike workouts but I had logged many longer rides so that wasn't a chief concern, however, I would add to the mileage there if you aren't accustom to spending 3h in the saddle.  Overall it is a good plan.

I am currently using the BT beginner IM plan.  I have used it for the first 8 weeks to build my base.  I am about to jump to a different plan over the final 8 weeks to peak a bit more.

I'm not exactly a beginner, but I'm using the HIM plan since I have no idea how to train for that long of a distance.  However, I'm using it as a very general guideline for knowing when to be in certain training "modes."  I have workouts and a somewhat regular intended weekly schedule that I like, so I intend on modifying the intensity of those set workouts according to what phase of training I should be in.  I mostly find it comforting to have a guide for when to start integrating speedwork, when to go for muscle recovery, when to taper, etc.  Hopefully it works!

It's a solid plan.  I used it to get ready for my first oly, then repeated parts of it while adding in some more biking to get ready for my first HIM.  I think there's enough biking to get you through, but it helped to do a few more long rides--if for nothing else than my confidence.

I followed the beginner 1/2 iron plan for my first last year. I think it is a great plan. As others suggested, I only added just a bit more mileage on the bike.

The result,
47:07 swim (Yep, it was slow and my weakness. I intentionally took it easy to save energy.)
2:46:53 bike (I felt good with a strong steady pace.)
1:54:20 run (I felt strong in the legs, but 3 port-john stops hurt my time - GI issues.

The only thing I will do differently for my upcoming half-iron (next month) is focus more on nutrition in order to limit gastrointestinal issues.

I started using there gold plan which I think might been too much too soon. I now switch to the beginner plan which well feels so light weight compared to the gold but probably makes more sense for me. I think I am going to switch it around some and point the plan for an early HIM and do both of them this summer.

I do like the idea of biking the distance and honestly I would idealy want to do 3 distrances atleast once a week just on different days.

Plus I am going to add in more running since I have a marathon in April now.

Good information shared on this thread. With cycling being my weakness, other than "longer 4+ hour" rides, what other recommendations might you have to augment the plan?

I am finding the plan very "doable" mixed with a nutrition plan and a weight training plan. My weight is not ideal for triathlons! But, have seen a decrease of just under 3% body fat in last eight weeks.

Some follow-up questions:

* With this plan have you or did you monitor your effort through RPE and heart rate monitor or did you throw the heart rate monitor out the window?

* Anyone using Power Taps on the bike or using cadence as bio feedback?

* What is the "average" distance with your cycling per week?

Thanks! (If newbies have questions about the Beginner 1/2 Ironman Training Plan, jump in with your questions. This is how we all learn!)

I don't really think you need longer 4+ hour rides.  Just more rides in the 3 hour range than are included in the plan--something close to the actual time you will be riding in the race.

With this plan have you or did you monitor your effort through RPE and heart rate monitor or did you throw the heart rate monitor out the window?

I used HR.  That was my first season and it was hard to trust RPE (especially over the HIM distance).  Now I'm more comfortable using a combo (still monitor HR as a check, but usually rely on RPE more)

Anyone using Power Taps on the bike or using cadence as bio feedback?

I use a PT now.  Didn't then.  Much better than HR on the bike if you know how to use it.  Also use cadence, but don't obsess over it much.  Just another check.

What is the "average" distance with your cycling per week?

I don't know.  You could go check my logs from the summer of 2005.  I doubt I averaged more than 75-80 mpw for very long.

Oh, thanks to the person who started this thread!

I’m about to get into the meat of this plan (I think that I’m somewhere around week 11).  This is my first HIM, so I’m following the plan pretty closely (except for the swimming).  I know some people mentioned making the long bike rides a little longer.  Would it also be beneficial to make some of the medium bike rides a little longer as well?

You are welcome, Naners! I started the thread because I was using the plan "blindly". Was wondering the experiences of others using this plan in prep for HIM. Sounds like sound advice in lengthening the bike rides a little (i.e. 3 hrs on bike possibly on Saturday or other rides).

Wondering if anyone added sports massages into their regime? Pros / Cons? Other things they added or supplemented the plan with?

What about stretching routines? Not much mentioned in the plan.....it is common sense, but does anyone have any best practices?

Thanks JohnnyKay!

How do you balance your family life, "work", and your training. (I have a heck of a commute here in Los Angeles ..... 1 1/2 one-way!) Wife and son are always asked, what is he training for now?

Thanks for your insight!

Speedracer and I are using the plan for a June 10th race.  As for modifications, it gets modified on an as needed basis.  If I miss a training day, so be it.  Just finished a swim focused week, am in a run focused week and next week if bike focused before another recovery week.  By at least following a plan I’ll have a better chance of enjoying the race and finishing.

Cyclingmaniac - 2007-03-28 2:33 PM Thanks JohnnyKay! How do you balance your family life, "work", and your training. (I have a heck of a commute here in Los Angeles ..... 1 1/2 one-way!) Wife and son are always asked, what is he training for now? Thanks for your insight!

Don't envy the L.A. commute.  Mine is 40-50min, most of that on the train where I can either do some work or take a nap.

Most of my workouts are early am.  This morning I was out the door at 5:20 and swimming by 5:40.  On the train at 7:20.  Tomorrow, I'll be up at about 4:15 and on the roads for a 2hr run by 4:30.  I try to keep weekday evening workouts limited to 1-2x/wk.  This week, I was able to work in runs while I was at my son's baseball practices.  I've done the same with soccer, etc. in the past.  Weekends vary more depneding on family plans, but still usually out early so that I'm home, showered & fed by lunchtime.  Still, it's a challenge to balance everything.  Always remember who comes first and don't stress too much about missing a workout.

My first tri was a 1/2 iron and one thing to add is Brick workouts. If
your going to add to the plan maybe get some extra runs in, especially
after a ride. Not long runs but believe me it will help.

I'm using it but not following it 100% (as evidenced in my logs).  I'm more focused on trying to get the volume in rather than doing strides or high gear workouts.  It's hard enough for me to do the 2 hour continuous runs let alone figuring out my RPE every 20 mins. or whatever it calls for.

I ran an OLY last weekend which is about half way into the HIM plan and I PR'ed my bike and run so I'm happy with how it's working for me thus far.

Now Mac brings up something ....hmmmm..... has anyone else used a shorter triathlon to test your progress? If so, did you do more than one shorter triathlon? How long between "training triathlon events"? I entered a sprint and an olympic, but more so because I didn't want to get bored with just doing training between mid-Feb. and July.

Anyone else schedule "training triathlons"?

Thanks for your thoughts and input.
