North Carolina Azalea Festival
52F / 11C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 30m 13s
Overall Rank = 335/345
Age Group = Master Clydsdal
Age Group Rank = 15/17
Pre-race routine:

I woke up at 5:30, rode my bike around 2.25 miles from the hotel to the race site so my family could sleep in and then come and support me. I set up my TA and chatted a bit.
Event warmup:

I didn't really do any warm-up other than stretching.
Swim
  • 05m 2s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was definitely an average to below average swim for me. I think I took it out too fast, and then died, but I stayed the proper distance ahead of the person behind me. There were no other swimmer issues the entire swim.
What would you do differently?:

I believe that the swim with anxiety and the ensuing run to T1 was a little quick. Maybe as much as 1-2 minutes early might have cost me 15 minutes or more on the bike. However, I do not know what I could do differently as this is my first triathlon
Transition 1
  • 03m 40s
Comments:

T1 started with a .2 mile run from the pool to the transition area.
This was a killer. I got my socks, shoes, jersey and helmet on o.k.
I only put one glove on while running to the exit, and never put on the other glove. I forgot my sunglasses.
What would you do differently?:

I would have taken a taxi from the pool to T1.
Bike
  • 49m 10s
  • 10.1 miles
  • 12.33 mile/hr
Comments:

I hopped on my bike and started pedaling. there was nothing but pain. I felt worse than after riding 45 miles. I didn't have enough to push gears or spin fast. It was a long painful ride that made me question this whole training and triathlon thing. I got passed by tons of people, who I think felt sorry for me. I was the perfect imitation of a Fred. I also got hit by a car that didn't want to move over on Eastwood.
What would you do differently?:

Everything.
Transition 2
  • 02m 2s
Comments:

I was completely disheartened at this time. Half of me wanted to quit, but I decided that I would press on. I definitely took at least an extra 45 seconds here.
What would you do differently?:

This was my first triathlon, so I will know what to expect next time.
Run
  • 30m 20s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

I started the run completely down on myself, so my pace was a little slow. I saw my wife and kids about .1 miles in and that cheered me up a bit. I walked through the first two water stops. At the turnaround, I started getting back into the groove and probably ran a significant negative split.
What would you do differently?:

Now that I know how it feels to run after a bike leg in a race, I will push harder. I could easily take off 2-3 minutes on the run.
Post race
Warm down:

I walked around, thanked the two college coops that work with me for staying and cheering me on to my finish, met up with my family and had some nutrition and hydration. Took the family to the NC Aquarium, drove back home and went to Umstead to meet some BT folks and cheer on Fit and Trix.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

This Lactic Acid thing with my Quads that completely dessimated my bike leg. I need to work this out in the next 4 weeks.

Also, not get so busy that I lose my workouts for the week prior. I intended to cut back the last week, but not stop altogether.

Event comments:

I liked the race, but my performance was disappointing.

Actually for your first one I think you did pretty darn good.  The first one - it's always an experience.

Note on the shop - don't kick very hard during the shop - you want to save your legs for the dance.  Being a little slower on the shop and then fresher on the dance is a good strategy.

First off CONGRATS on finishing your first Tri, that is an awesome accomplishment. Second you got hit by a car??? Was the course open to traffic, did you get hurt, hope you did not get hurt. Third did you have money with you for a cab ride at T1?

I didn't get hit.  I almost got hit.  I guess I must have forgotten that key word "Almost".

Now you have a great story to tell!  Thats the best thing about your first tri, if it went perfectly it would be boring and you'd have nothing to share... Seriously, great job, I'm looking forward to your next report

Great race and congrats on completing your first race. You are not alone in having the thoughts about giving up during your first race. I think a lot of people get the same feeling. I know I did. Now you have that first one under your belt and can learn off that experience.
