This event looks like a really fun and challenging time. I wish they'd get rid of the multi-loop run at the end, but what can you do right? I hope they listen to some of the comments about last year and have some Kayaks etc. available for the swim. This will be my first Oly.

I'll prolly do this race as my first Oly as well. They used to have the elevation changes posted and they took them off, its not an "easy" bike by any means, thats for certain

ROFL, yeah I am going to run the half at Racefest next week with some buddies from work. I just hope to finish since its my first attempt at the distance. The guys I am running with are both two time Ironman finishers who are trying to push me to do Ironman in a few years so I figure I might as well try half the distance of half the run

You know, I was reading the "Race Logistics" portion of this race: http://www.setupevents.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=event_detail&eventI...

what do you guys think of all this, busing, and placing your things inside a plastic bag in T1 etc. and doing two laps of the same run course?

Tzmitch and I are both doing this one this year. I believe he had some comments about the format in a previous posting about Over the Mtn. Another buddy of mine did this last year. The race logistics were sort of a pain but he completed the event with a respectable time and road a freakin' mtn bike with slicks.

Thread is here-http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=63139&posts=5&highlight=over%20the%20mountain&highlightmode=2#M651268

apparently you need to get there extra early to setup your "two" transition areas, and there's two big hills on the bike portion.

I looked/ walked the Cycling route and used Google Maps Pedometer and Local Live. The map they give has different names for a lot of the roads, and one time their route doesn't even go over a road from what I can tell.

The "do two laps of Gold and Phifer St." is lame in my opinion and I almost don't want to do this race simply because of that. I mean come on, have us loop around your town, but don't make us tag the start and then "one more time" the whole thing. How boring. How do you keep track of people straight who's double backing and what not, do the champion chips record your split I wonder?

I hope I put all of my T1 stuff in the plastic bag properly before hitting the bike. geez.

Nobody chatting on here yet? We've got some shy one's here I guess. We've got about a week and half to go, making plans, strategizing etc.

Here's the Elevation of the bike route. I did the best with Google Pedometer that I could, but some of the roads on the race course like I said before aren't on the map or satellite projections.

Getting psyched up for it now.  Going to pre-ride the course tomorrow afternoon if all goes well. This will be my first Olympic so I'm a little nervous about it, especially with all the extra logistics invovled with this one.

I'm jealous that you're getting a chance to ride the course. I'm stuck up here in Washington, D.C. with no chance of riding it before the race. We've been doing the Columbia, MD bike course up here, which is somewhat similar, but as you may know, never suffices an actual course ride.
Anyone know what the water temp is? The girlfriend and I will probably go wetsuit free.

We raced Cane Creek 10 days ago which is a much smaller/shallower lake. It was 74 at the time.

It was not wetsuit legal last year BUT it was two weeks later in June. Hopefully, it will not be wetsuit legal again this year.

This will be my first OLY race (have only competed in sprints thus far), but I train in some "hilly" terrain around Raleigh (Apex to be exact).  This ride, plotted as best I could on BT routetracker, has ~1700 ft of climbing, and 282 feet on the run.  I'm nervous more about the swim (longest OWS to date for me is 750m) than the bike.  I'm actually looking forward to the bike and the run, no matter if it's a double loop.  I'm racing with a training partner, and that will give me a chance to say hello to him during the race, as he will have a faster swim and bike than me.

I'm still working on nutrition logistics, as my longest duration race has been 1'48" or so (before I got serious about this sport).  I'm in the 1'20" range for a long sprint now, and just use HEED on the bike, hammer gel/GU on the run.  I'm thinking a GU right out of the water/on the bike, two HEED bottles on the bike, and 2 GUs on the run with water every 10-15 minutes.  Other OLY racers care to share their nutrition planning for a race like this?

Hey Forrest,
The ride does look a bit steep, I wish I could ride it before.

My nutrition plan is this. Night before carbo load with pasta dinner, low on the sauce, being careful not to get too bloated from eating too much. No wine

Morning of, bagel with peanut butter, or instant oatmeal, washed down with coffee(little sugar). More Accelerade in bottle sipped on for the ride there (usually finish). Hour before eat half a power bar, GU with caffeine 30 minutes before swim.
On Bike, I have a GU with sodium taped to the bar of my bike so I can rip it off with one hand. I have a half mixture of Gatorade Performance and Accelerade in ONE bottle in my bottle cage on the bike. I've found I really don't need more than one bottle for only 24 miles. Big swig of Gatorade Performance from a bottle at T2 I have there.
On my race belt for the run, I have Jelly Belly sport beans in the pouch. I try to swallow those down with the water they give. That's it!

Made our first trip out to the course today--Holy crap!  First, let me say that your first major challenge looks to be right out of the water.  The boat ramp which leads up to where we believe the 1st TA will be is steep. That's going to kick everyone's butt.  The roads are decent, not perfectly smooth, but overall in pretty good shape.  There wasn't much traffic even at 2pm today.

Now for the bike--As soon as you come out of the TA, you head into a short uphill section as you pass the golf course.  Mile 2 has a pretty decent climb, not overly steep but long.  Another similar climb at Mile 4 but longer.  Next few miles are rolling.  Right at Mile 8 you start a climb which lasts around 1.3 miles.  There are some great down hills on these course but you will earn them.  You'll climb to reach them and climb at the end of them.  10-13 are pretty nice, good time to get some fluids and nutrition on board.  Once you cross into South Carolina, you head into the National/State park.  Miles 14/15 are long, gradual climbs as is most of the park, from miles 14 thru about 22.  23-26 are mostly uphill with a few mixed downhills.  The last few miles to 2nd TA are mostly flat and a good time to get your legs loose and get mentally prepped for the run.  It was hot and very sunny today--Definitely get your nutrition/fluid plan in place in anticipation of a hot race.

We ran out of time and didn't get a chance to play with the run course.  I feel better having seen the course but know this is going to be a challenge.

Hey Craig--I hate to tell you, but the first 14 are the easy half.  The second half starts as you enter the park and it's much tougher.

Is it anything like this one?

That's coming out of the TA at Bandit's Challenge.  If you look carefully at the top, you'll see a guy pushing his bike.  MEAN!

I feel like I'll pull the trigger any day now.  I'm just waiting for the spirit to move me.

That's definitely tougher, but the run from the lake to the TA looks similar.

I'm so dead...but at least I won't need any legs at the end of the ride. I think I might like this AquaBike thing.
