Subject: Mavic Ksyrium SL3 – front axle/bearing adjustment?
Just got a pair of SL3s and the front axle has some play in it—I noticed it when the front wheel was mounted and I was rolling the bike.

Now, the wheels came with this fancy wrench for adjusting the axle (fits in holes on one side of the hub) but I’ll be dammed it I can find a spot on the other side of the wheel to put a flat wrench on! Anyone know how to adjust these suckers?

Thanks for any info.

Rob

Did a quick search and found that you need to have the wheel mounted and QR tight to adjust bearings. Or you could check the Mavic site.

Thanks, John.

As I was driving to a party with my wife this afternoon I thought about possibly having to have it in the fork.

I did check the Mavic site but didn't see anything on the Tech page. Maybe I missed it.

In any event, thanks again!

put the wheels in the frame as they were if you were about to get riding...

try to rock the wheels side to side (left to right) by lightly pulling/pushing the tire from side to side...

if there is any play in the wheels (you will notice it if there is), take the little plastic tool and while the wheel is still in the frame, slightly tighten the lockring until the play goes away (usually maybe 1/8 or 1/16 turn).

(if you want to get an idea of what "play" feels like, loosen the lockring a full turn and then rock the wheel side to side...you will feel "play")....then tighten it back up to just the point where the play is gone, and the wheel still rotates freely.

On my older set, the bearings loosen up frequently, so i unscrewed the lockring completely, and applied a little Loctite 242 (the blue stuff) to the lockring, and reinstalled....problem fixed.

Thanks, Doug.

The is play in the wheel, hence my trying to figure out how to tighten the lockring.

I like the Loctite suggestion so I just may do that now to head off any problems on a long ride.

Does it seem weird that in these days of sealed bearings that adjustments are still needed?  Years ago it was necessary to adjust them to get the slop out of the cone-bearing-race assembly, but I wonder why sealed casings need to be tightened.  Is it something specific to Mavic wheels only?  I have an older set of Mavic Kysriums but have never noticed any slop in them, nor do I have an adjustment tool.
