I have a question regarding bike tire blowouts. How often do any of you experience tire blow outs or leaks? over what time intervals?

I feel like I have been getting a lot of flats lately, and I am not quite sure if there is something systematic I can check. It is irritating and wrecks the flow of my ride. I have to ride in the city quite a bit to get to nice roads, which means more garbage in the road than I would actually like to encounter. However, I do not ever ride through anything "really" bad.

Any ideas? specific tubes you like, different psi amounts, etc. or do I just need to get really fast at changing tubes and deal with it?

I went through a period like that earlier this summer...seems like I blew out every time I rode.

All I can say is check the insides of your tires METICULOUSLY, use a flashlight if necessary. The last time I had to change a flat I found a teensy sliver of metal, smaller than a straightened out standard staple. It was stuck to the inside of my tire. I have no idea if it was what caused the 3 or 4 flats I'd had, but once I took it out, no more flats.

Also, make sure your tires are inflated to the recommended PSI. Check before every ride. Even a little drop in pressure can contribute to pinch flats.

You may have spoke poking into the tube.  Putting a layer of tube tape around the wheel usually fixes that problem.

I had a major blow out this summer...but I also hit a truck. Besides that, I don't seem to have any problems. My only advice: beware of gravel and large potholes.
