Pre-race routine:

brr it was cold this morning, got the bike packed into my friends car and off down teh freeway we headed to Mundijong. very glad I had the uggboots on! it was 4C in Mundijong when we got there.
Event warmup:

I didn't get ym act together for a good warm up. I did manage about 5 mins rolling around though. which is better then my usual warm up!
Bike
  • 2h 51m 8s
  • 80 kms
  • 28.05 km/hr
Comments:

I set off really well, the first lap I was very happy with myself and felt quite comfy. Drank enough had gels when I planned to have gels.
the first 10k's were with a tailwind. the next 30k's were into crosswinds and headwinds. First lap was fine though.

I had planned to sit on a 30k average and was trying to keep my cadence over 85. which I did on the first lap.

the second lap it all fell to pieces a little. 40 to 50k was great with a tailwind. but the wind had picked up so the last 30k's were into crosswind and headwind and were really hard work.

I must have miscalculated the amount of gels I needed. I had three with me which I htought woudl be enough. But I definitely needed an extra gel to get me through the last 15k's

the course was so mind numbingly boring, just dry brown paddocks. with trucks rushing passed. my left hand cramped up pretty severly and my neck was hurting but think thats just being down on the aerobars for 80k's
What would you do differently?:

Take an extra gel.(and have spare duh stupid mistake) try and push it harder into the wind. that last 10k's was really hard.
Post race
Warm down:

rode passed the timing guy, rode about 500m's down the road came back threw on the sneakers and went for a 15min run. Ok I lie a 15min shuffle. my legs were not liking that idea one little bit. all cramped up badly.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

lack of speed.

Event comments:

So I was aiming for about 2hrs 40, but I think with the wind and wihtout that extra gel I'm fairly happy with my time. I have been told by all the guys there that with the rough roads they were slow roads. so hopefully that all adds up to 10mins extra.

Hopefully thats some good fast km's under my belt and good preparation for busselton! 4 weeks to go!

Nice ride...sounds like it was a good heart builder if nothing else...no doubt Busso will be windy on the bike.  good luck with your last few weeks training.
