I don't know if it is every where. But is seems that around here the talk is just look at how small a frame I can ride on my Tri bike. I have had quite a few Tri'ers telling me about their new rides and about how small they are able to go on frame size. Now they are getting fitted at a couple of different LBS so I am just wondering. Is there any advantage to micro-sizing (ex; a friend of mine, Male about 6'2" or 6'3" riding a 53 cm frame, said the LBS could have put him on a 51 cm)??? I am happy with my bike size but I can not understand this trend to riding smaller and smaller frames. Pretty soon at this rate we will just hold the fork and mount the seat to the rear wheel some how. There by getting rid of the frame all together. So BT'ers what do you think?? is this just a local nutzy thing???

I would assume that it has to do with minimizing weight, but that hardly seems to be worth it if you are sacrificing a good, natural position.

While watching IMWI my sister and I would call them "Teeny Tiny men on Teeny Tiny bikes".

Umm, that is all I have to add.

I think if you are between sizes go for the smaller size. I havent heard of a 6'3 dude and a 53cm bike much less squeezing him on a 51cm. Im 5'7ish and ride a 51cm and it fits me perfectly. Id imagine being 6'3, the stem on it would be really long and then you start getting into handling issues. Imagine what the drop would be from the seat to the aerobars. As they say "too much dude, too little bike."

Yeah, it's the trend right now.  Used to be 650 wheels and 80 degree seat tubes, now it's how compact you can get the bike to get you low and aero and light.

I actually ordered a 56 frame for my Felt, but they mis-shipped a 58.  So I sat down on the floor of the shop looking at the 58, got the geometry chart out and really studied it and had them give me a set of wheels so I could throw them on the frame and do a stand-over.  I figured out that the stand-over was good, the geometry still was aggressive enough for me and since you had to use their post if I had gone with the 56 I might run into issues with barely having enough post left to meet the minimum.  So "someone" above was looking out for me and sent the 58 instead.  And I went ahead and took it!

Edit - And I'm 6'-1" with about a 33" inseam.

I just bought a Cannondale CAAD 8 2 weeks ago and the local LBS fit me into a 50cm frame. I'm 5'8" with a longer torso and shorter legs. I was originally test riding a 52 and they thought a 50 fit better.

I'm 6'1" and with my old 54cm road bike my foot would hit the back of the front tire during a turn.  Having to time your pedals to your turns is a pain in the neck, and dangerous for someone without my incredible coordination and timing.

Having overlap issues while turning very slow and sharp has nothing to do with the fit of the frame. It is mostly a rake angle issue and even most pro riders with perfectly fitted frames has that.

Phew - I thought buying a 56cm bike when I should be riding a 58 to save money was awful... now I hear I can go down to 51!... sweet.

Depends on how they're measuring the size. If it's center-to-center seat tube, then 51 isn't that out-of-bounds for some one that tall, especially if they're looking for a fairly aggressive position.

Thanks for all the input. I was beginning to think I was the only person in the world that thought riding like a demented grasshopper was strange. I'm 5'10" with a 35 inch inseam and I ride a 57 cm Javelin,,,, an it fits me fine. But next to some of these guys bikes it looks huge. I just figured that adding longer seat posts, stem and other stuff to make it fit was odd, and prob. messed with the true geo. of the frame. Just wanted to see what my BT friends would think

Talk about going small!!!  I don't know how fast one can go on this, but think about the weight savings!!
