so, anyone who's seen my logs knows i cant train. last night i took some pictures of the reason why. i am seriously going insane. can't ride cuz i can't wear a helmet. can't run cuz it hurts too bad. can't swim cuz the chlorine will upset my owie. haven't been able to shave in a few weeks. so in all its glory i present, my staph infected skin abscess.

going in for surgery tomorrow.

Sorry to hear - look forward to that surgery is the first thing, and feel better.

As for going crazy... we do get kinda addicted to the endorphins.

During your recovery, how 'bout trying something less jarring than running - riding on a trainer or stationary bike, or using the eliptical machine at a gym?

Can you free lift & do squats?  I'm guessing pushups no... if you do large-muscle-groups strength work in a CIRCUIT instead of in squats, with no rest between sets, you will maintain a nice high heartrate.  In fact 20 minutes of that might do it.

If you have no access to a gym or freeweights, you could try squats (remember, no rest), then chair dips, then pushups if you can, then whatever ab exercise you might be able to do without pain, then back to the beginning.  Good luck!

Oops, I just read your log:  no SWEATING!

So forget the suggestion on strength work... time to learn some Tai Chi breathing.  Seriously.  Deep, controlled inhales and slow exhales.  Sometimes our breath is the only thing we have left to work with.

Again, feel better.

Work on your stretching or abs.

Seriously... if you monitor your progress of flexibility or ab strength, the improvement is enough to satisfy your competitive urges.

Ouchy!

What about just going for walks? I know that's not as fun as "real" training but it at least gets you outside and moving around a bit. Also I would think you could do some basic weights without sweating too much. And stretching/yoga is always fun too. Hope the surgery goes well for ya! What a bummer!

If you can't sweat, then do yoga. You will maintain some muscle fitness and improve flexibility as well as mental training. Not much you can do about the loss of cardio fitness.

Its tough for awhile though, no doubt. I know from personal experience unfortunately.

Good luck. The time will pass faster than you think.

well,
i just got in from my appt. the dr. didn't want to do surgery after all. apparently it's safer to let it heal on its own then to do surgery and risk infection. he did say i could shave though. yeah. said i can sweat now, just to be careful with the helmet strap.

I am curious, has it gotten any better on the antibiotics? Did he culture the abcess?  There are super bugs out there now and I hate to see the worse happen, as a nurse just making sure you are getting good care!

Maybe ride on the trainer? I know the pain of not being able to train, I had ITBS last year and wasn't able to do much other than swim for most of the season. Hang in there!!

yup, it was mrsa. (resistant to most antibiotics) which involved me getting some super antibiotic shot in the butt. you should have seen me walking around pismo. dragging one leg behind me looking like quasi moto with lumps all over my face. i had a smaller abscess on my jaw that oozed out on the way there and didn't come back. the doctor seemed to be more concerned with cutting me and spreading the infection than letting the antibiotics work and my body absorb it. he said that unless i cut it open and get an infection it should be gone in the next few days. feels good to have shaved. im sporting the jeepfleeb beard now. kinda looks good i think.

Nasty stuff. Co-worker of mine is missing all this week with same business on his butt. He had it on his pinky finger 3 months ago and wound up in the hospital for a few days. Seems he ignored the don't drink alcohol while taking antibiotics thing. Hope he heeds the warning this time.

How about walking around beautiful downtown Visalia?

Seriously, I feel for ya.  Except for some commuter biking, I didn't workout for six months last year because of plantar fasciitis and the resultant lack of motivation.

The mood swing that come from stopping your training is real!  Do what you can to take care of that.

Of course, you could always just spend more time in CoJ...

wow, i've never even seen that sign, and i live near downtown! im back though, taking my aggression and pent up hostility out on some salmon this weekend. were heading up to monterey and im fishing off my boat for the first time. my brother and brother-in-law probably have 10 days on it, but its the maiden voyage for me. two days on the water just us and the fish. and some steaks, and sausages. im taking my wetsuit, just in case i get a chance to do a really really open water swim.

ha!

well, this was just what the dr. ordered
one 28lb. one 32 lb. lots of fresh salmon for a while. we're smoking 1/2 of one fish. the rest we cut into steaks. i did some swim specific weight stuff late last week, just enough for a small workout, but not enough to sweat. hitting it HARD this week.
