REminds me of that old song.

Going to the Bike show and I am show and I am going to get married.

In all seriousness I am going to the Chicago Bike show probably tomorrow, maybe sunday.

I am looking for a bike (one that goes really fast and hopely red ) and every Chicago area dealer will be there. Question is what questions should I ask to find the best store to go to? Anything I should look for from a LBS?

Should I trust them if they talk how then can get a 63cm bike to fit since I am tall and how no idea what I need?

Steer clear away from red bikes.  Wolves in sheeps clothing.  They are decievingly slow.  You think, ah, red bike....fast.  But no, the red in the paint is made from lead which actually is heavier, and is attracted to water, which means it will be slow in leaving T1.  Just my .02.

Have fun at the show.  Wish I were going.

Go for the black bike.  Black absorbs more heat.  That warms the air around your frame.  Warm air it lighter than cold are and therefore provides less resistance.

Talk about a wolf in sheeps clothing, how about a guy averaging 15mph in his last tri telling you about how other-colored bikes are slow.

ALWAYS consider the source. Cool

Ok Other than color is there anything else I should do when I have all the LBS in 1 central location? Any questions to ask to find out if they are going to set me up correctly and not just trying to make a buck?

oh yeah. should I wait until after I find out if I am going to Kona before I go?

Personal experience:

DO NOT buy from a chain bike store. The owner operated shops care about their customers and go the extra mile for you. The bigger stores usually could care less. They treat you right when you make the big bucks buy but god help you if you have a service/warranty issue

Or (like me), you could pick the best of both worlds: black, red, and silver.

I'm in the industry, and believe me the margin for independent bike retailers ain't all that impressive.  Don't go into the relationship (and I use that word because the better shops do view it this way - you're not just a customer), don't enter the relationship with the chip on your shoulder that their jipping you.  Be prepared with questions and find the expert in the store that will really help you.

Tell them what kind of riding you do, any injuries you have, average mileage per week, long term goals, that you're local and you want to build a long-term relationship and plan to do service with them.  Ask them what kind of service plans or recommendations they offer.  Ask them if they have fitting services.  You'll probably know more than the average Joe when you go in to the store (by nature of the fact you're on this board), but be open to hearing new ideas, too.  Ask them if they have any group rides from the store.

All these types of questions will help them feel good about you as a customer (and be willing, in the future to offer you loyalty deals, i.e. on service or accessories.)  If they try to sell you something out of your budget, gently voice your objection - go home with the bike YOU want - this will make you really happy in the end.  Consider, too, if they have financing; this is not something to dupe you into a better bike - think of it as a service the shop offers you (and they often pay high processing fees to offer you this), that allows you to pick the best bike now (and pay later).  Often the rates are much lower than slapping it on your credit card.

Other questions to ask: How long has the shop been there, how they got in the business, do they ride too?

Hope this helps!

Support your local bike retailer - in the long run they will help the sport stay healthy!!

Out of curiosity, what is the name of your LBS?

I think this shop is about 1/2 hour away from you.  If you're ever nearby, swing in and tell them Katherine from TBS recommended the store.

The LBS I been going to is Village Cycle sports they have a couple of locations.

At the show will be Kosy cycles, Village Cycle Center, performance bike, sure alot more that I am missing on the site. It is the midwest largest bike show. Plus there will be alot of rides and such there promoting themselves. Trek will be there themselves to promote there bikes.

Kozy's is wonderful, too!  If their staff are anything like their owners, Paul and Ron, you'll get GREAT service there.

th thing I did not like about the Village cycle sports is the guy was all you should get a hybrid because on a road bike all you do it hit 1 stone and will fall and really hurt yourself. where you have people on here like bear who go down the side if a cliff on there tri bike and stay in the aero the whole way.

I will admit I was looking at hybrids because of the price but many ways I wish I would have gotten something like the trek 1000 atleast. oh well I am sure there will be good uses for the hybrid even after I get my lean mean biking machine. Like going to visit friends for a party and they are close enough not to drive and I do not want to carry spare shoes.

My entire first racing season I rode a (very old) hybrid, which worked wonderfully, b/c it was very comfortable to ride around town. I finally upgraded to road (not even to full-on tri) to lose some the weight of the hefty hybrid.  Pick what works for you!  You're the one who has to motor it!

well season one hybrid was ok. Sure I DFL on the Bike first race and like DFSL on the next but with a HIM coming up I think a hybrid will be alot harder to use. eSpically since the bike is grey.

I wouldnt get your hopes up too high about walking out of there in love with a bike and a shop. Just go talk to everybody. You know what you want, see how they react and what they suggest. If they still say "man you need a hybrid" you can walk on.

Another thing, to some shops, the show is about moving inventory--what didnt sell last year, or what they want to move this season--so naturally they will steer you to what they want to dump. Sure, you may want a 63 XYZ, but "the ABC in a 59 is better for you...."

Choice of shop is yours, where you feel comfortable. Lots of people I know LOVE certain shops and I have gone in, based on what people say and have not liked it at all. Anyway, its easy to become a lemming because people you know like certain shops. Don't fall for it.

More than the shops, go talk to the manufacturers. Treat it like the auto show. You don't drive out with a new car do you? But you sure get to kick a lot of tires, right? Trek, Specialized, Felt, Giant, they'll probably all be there. They dont care who you buy from, they just want you to buy their bikes. They will talk straight about what they make that might work for you. Then you become an educated consumer and you can look for shops that sell that make/model and, finally, that you like.
