Precipitation
Total Time = 4h 18m 45s
Overall Rank = /500
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 64/65
Event warmup:

Went for a short run to warm-up followed by 10 minutes in the water, needed to go back for a second swim cap as the lake was quite cold.
Swim
  • 23m 39s
  • 1000 meters
  • 02m 22s / 100 meters
Comments:

Had a fantastic swim, very happy with the pacing, breathing etc really starting to see the swimming coming together, now to work on the speed.
What would you do differently?:

Improvements will come as I work more on technique but happy to have shaved 12 minutes off last years swim time and very little breastroke involed.
Transition 1
  • 02m 43s
Comments:

There was a fairly good run from the beach to transition which was just as well as the zipper got stuck on the wetsuit but come unstuck with enough time to remove the top half before reaching the bike. It was pretty chilly yesterday and being off-road there is more to put on such as arm warmers, glovers, camelbak, socks etc etc so a bit slower than normal but happy with the transition.
Bike
  • 2h 19m 34s
  • 30 kms
  • 12.90 km/hr
Comments:

Pretty happy with the bike leg, didn't push it too hard to start with but was feeling a bit tired and sore towards the end and happy to get off the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Probably need to do some more faster endurance races, the technical aspects were fine and I knew the course inside out, keeping a fast pace going was the harder part.
Transition 2
  • 02m 44s
Comments:

A pretty quick transition, not sure of the exact time, dumped the bike gear grabbed a hat and some jelly snakes to get me round the course and headed off.
Run
  • 1h 36m 32s
  • 11 kms
  • 08m 47s  min/km
Comments:

Started out ok, but quickly ran out of steam, cramped up quite badly on a couple of occassions and the second laps was more walk than run, managed to turn my ankle at some point so hobbled back to run across the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure what to do differently, I hadn't done much off-road recently but coming off a long season hadn't helped.
Post race
Warm down:

Grabbed some water and replace followed by some food and a massage.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Being sicks for 3 weeks a couple of weeks ago interupted some of the peak training phases for this race and losing some of the motiviation over the last couple of months didn't help.

Event comments:

Overall was pretty happy with the race, took 1hr 15minutes off last years time, probably won't race it again next year, 3 years in a row has been enought for now.

Course: The Rotorua Xterra is a pretty tough course, a hill straight out of transition before some gravel roads leading up to the biggest climb of the course, a few minutes at the top to recover before the first singletrack a sweet piece of steep downhill before some more gravel road and another climb, managed to make up a lot of time and pass a few people on the ups and downs including singletrack with the MTB being my strongest leg. The rest of the course was some technical singletrack followed by a long grind home on 4wd around both of the lakes to finish on the road.

Course: The run course is a 2 lap course starting across the beach before heading up the road for a couple of hundred meetings before heading back down and around the lake (mixturue of up and down over roots and rocks) before crossing a second beach and up 3 flights of steps. A drinks station awaits at the top before a smooth 4wd road continues up the hill before heading back down around the far side of the lake, a couple of sharp downhills and undulating terrain back to the race village and lap 2.
