You did the hardest part of all.  You signed up for and trained for an IronMan; and then you gave it your all on the course.  That is something that 99% of the population couldn't imagine doing.  You may not have earned the moniker of Ironman (YET!), but it kinda sounds like you are one to me.

Elaine,

Congratulations on putting everything you had out there - there was nothing more you could've done and you know it. You kept it up and never gave in. You showed percevirence in the face of time not being with you. You kicked and screamed to the very end (on the bike at least). That is far more than what a lot of people will ever do.

You are a fine example of what it means to be tough. You showed character and your fighting spirit shines right thru. Look in the mirror with pride cause you gave it your all

We're with you and thank you for your leadership.

Remember, all those times you don't make it to your goal (wether 1X or 100), are called practice for when you do.

Elaine, you are awesome! I can't even imagine how hard you were working in that wind. Next time I'm up against some bad conditions I'm going to think about you and how hard you pushed it.

I kept checking on you progress yesterday and was worried that you had been injured. I'm glad that you didn't have a bad bike crash or anything.

So...I guess now it is just a question of what is the next challenge?

Elaine - you've got nothing to be embarrassed about.  You did awesome, they had to literally throw you off the course.  You didn't quit.

I was riding a particularly long hill Saturday, and a stupid saying came into my head, "that which is most painful is most memorable."  You experienced something most people in the world will never get the chance to do.  No doubt you will finish an IM someday, but you will never forget yesterday, or what you learned about yourself.

That you didn't finish an IM doesn't change who or what you are (which is awesome )

I think you should revise  the subject of this thread to "I'm not an Ironman-YET" because I have full faith in you that you WILL be one

I empathize with how you feel.  Though I haven't been there, may I offer this one thought: your race is not yet done.  The winds were challenging, but the biggest hurdle will to be get back on horse and plan for the next race.  Train with confidence to overcome this...not anger.  The fact that even attempted this great endeaver speaks to your strong character.  Don't feel defeated - be proud you did your ABSOLUTE best!

You did not get to an Ironman race by accident. You have already proven that you have the dedication and strength to make it there. This will make finishing your next one that much sweeter.

Those winds were brutal. I wish that I could have been there to watch the last 1.5 hours of your bike. It sounds like it was an epic battle of sweat and pain and screaming and heat and wind. Think of how few people have ever been able to experience something so big.

"Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even checkered by failures, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat" - Teddy Roosevelt

Elaine,

I am awed by the effort and courage you displayed yesterday.  Pedaling through those conditions for 112 miles is unbelievable.  They had to pull you off the course--you exemplify the spirit of an Ironman!

You trained for and competed in an Ironman.  That in itself gives you bragging rights!

Your story brought me to tears. You are so strong to have signed up, trained and been out there fighting like that. I am so impressed at the way you didn't give up, even when your watch told you that the cut off was over. Don't let this make you give up either. You are too tough for that.

I don't know you, but I was peeking in on the updates yesterday and was worried about you too. I'm glad to hear you're OK, and you are...even if you feel sucky (which you shouldn't).

Your story is amazing. You are amazing, and I agree with everyone else - YOU WILL BE AN IRON MAN! You are a winner! I admire you.

Thanks everyone! Only fellow triathletes can really understand.

Well, I did a race report anyways. I figured it would be good to capture everything right now how I'm feeling it and while it's fresh in my mind. This way, I can read the report again anytime I'm feeling like I need more motivation.

And I just registered for next year's IMAZ. It might sell out, and while I'm mentally not ready, I figured it's best to guarantee myself and entry and another chance to become and Ironman. Let the training begin! (Well...after this month. I need a little time off. )

just think how good your base is right now. You will rock but yes for now take some time off and let yourself rest physically and mentally. 1 year is a long time and you done most of the hard work already. Now you just have to get little better and you will rock.

Wow.  Elaine, you rock.  I was following you online yesterday and my stomach just dropped when it looked like you were MIA.  I too, am really glad to hear that you are still in one peice!!  I'm not sure I would have been mentally tough enough to get through half of what you just did, so cut yourself a little slack.    Its got to just suck to not end up where you thought you'd be at the end of the day, but you will get there!!!  I can't wait to read your next race report.

Congrats on all your training and getting through the first 2/3 of an Ironman- that's incredible!!

Elaine, congrats on signing up for next year! It can't be any worse than this year, that's for sure! I am so sorry for what happened to you. I was so demoralized after the first lap of the bike. I totally wanted to quit. It was such a hard day.

I can't wait to see you finish next year.

At least I learned what I should change for next time. I want to put a different seat on my bike, find a different nutrition plan, etc. So I did learn some things out there that will hopefully help me do even better next time.

I am looking forward to jumping over and reading your race report.  Your day was full of courage and heart.

I was wondering what all you would change and what you believe you will do to better prepare?  (I want to learn lessons through your experience)

And way to sign up for next years!

Pirategirl - Just wanted to say thank you for posting this! So inspirational! I read your post right before I went for my run today....and while I was out there I started feelin really exhausted, wanting to quit, and started totally beatin myself up...all the usual "what am I thinking? I'll never be able to do this! I can't be a runner!" Anyway...i found myself thinking of you struggling into the wind even with all the odds against you you never gave up. That got me to keep going and finishing my run. So thank you for that! Your story is truly an incredible one! Add one more to the group that things you're absolutely awesome for being out there and trying it...something most people could never imagine. You accomplished more in one day then most people will in a lifetime!

Elaine,

Sarah Reinertson didn't make her first bike cutoff either.  The way I see it, you just have some unfinished business....

Way to bust your ...with that mentality you WILL become an Ironman.  It just wasn't your day.

PirateGirl, you rock.

I can tell. I can tell by reading what you wrote that the only way on god's green earth that you were going to DNF was if they pulled you off the course. That, or if your bike suddenly disintegrated into several hundred small pieces of aluminum and carbon fiber.

But that moment that you were crying in the medical tent? That's why we do this stuff. That emotion, right there; that raw need to get to the finish line? That's why we're here. The race officials that were crying along with you recognized it.

You know what's kind of funny...crying over NOT being able to do a marathon after swimming 2.4 miles and biking 112. That's probably why people call triathletes crazy.

There's a 65 year old woman in my tri club that has done 5 Ironmans, including 2 Konas. She told me her first one was IMCDA in '01 and she missed the bike cutoff by 3 minutes. She did IMNZ in '04 and missed the midnight cuttoff by 2 minutes. They sent her a certificate in the mail with her swim time, bike time, and a huge DNF for the run and finish time. She said she threw it in the trash, but now she wishes she would have kept it as that fueled her to keep going. If this lady can do it, then I can too!

Pirategirl, I doubt there's much more to be said, more than my little head can come up with anyway. I can't begin to imagine how hard it must have been to have to stop at AZ. I am training for my first triathlon this weekend and I think what you went though is what scares the crap out of me the most. It's probably what scares everyone in this triathlon lifestyle...DNF. 3 very ugly words that have no regard for what everyone has gone through to get to their individual race. I appreciate your words of inspiration and will use them this weekend! Good luck in all your upcoming training and races, I'm watching you!

Elaine,
Your story caused my eyes to swell with tears.  I know the disappointment of training as hard as you can and not being able to realize your dream of finishing.  I can really relate to "I never envisioned this happening."  I DNF'd the GCT HIM last year when I got sea sick on the swim.  I had trained for months and never dreamed I'd get sea sick in the water.  It was totally humiliating to go home having failed to achieve my goal of finishing.  But after all the encouragement I received from this board, I got back in the game.  Within a couple of weeks I signed up for my next triathlon.  Now I'm training for IMKY.

Hang in there!

Here is my sad story.  Read the encouragement I got from this board!

~Mike

Elaine, I was looking for you on the course but didn't see you (after I saw you repeatedly at SOMA).

10% of the people who started yesterday did not make it. Because of the winds, when I got off the bike I changed my aspirations of posting a good time into finishing as did a lot of people I talked to. I really never thought I would walk in a race and to get myself to feeling better I started walking.

Fighting through that wind and finishing the 112 mile bike after doing the 2.4 mile swim should still make you feel proud.

Keep your head up and look forward to your next challenge. See you at another race soon.

The weather is the one thing that years of training can do nothing about.

Last year at CDA when the temps hit 100o+ one of my training buddies who had completed 3 IMs, who was 18th over out of the water, and who did a 5:40 on the bike cramped up from the heat and resulting electrolyte imbalance during the 1st lap of the run.

It's unfortunate that such things can bring down the best of us, but those little (and big) humble moments can show us our true character. I see that you're signed up for next year. That's the character of an Ironman.
