Age Group Rank = 6/13
Pre-race routine:

Rolled out of bed at 5:30am and had a large bowl of oatmeal with raisins and walnuts. One cup of coffee and a glass of water. Got dressed and packed my transition bag. Brett (Blaze teammate) and I planned on biking out to the race. LA was scheduled to volunteer at the race so she was going to meet us at 8:30 and give me my transition bag.
Event warmup:

Left home at 7:30 and biked out to the race at an easy pace. It's a 15 mile ride and Brett and I arrived at 8:15. Perfect bike warm-up. The plan now was to run one loop of the run segment, however, LA did not show up until 8:45 and the race started at 9:00 so there was no time for a good run warm-up.
Run
  • 15m 12s
  • 2.2 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

The trail is narrow so it's hard to pass people. It was very hard to advance on the first loop. I felt I was being held back and could not run my pace.
What would you do differently?:

Be more aggressive and run much harder for the first half mile. However, to run hard form the start from the start I need a proper run warm-up.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

I don't know what my transition time was but I felt I spent too much time in the transition area. I had a tough time to get my shoes off. The laces were tight and I struggled with them for awhile. My bike had two almost full water bottles in the cages so I had to remove those. Two bottles of water is not needed for a 9.6 mile ride! Lastly, I never reset my bike computer... WTF?
What would you do differently?:

Get speed laces for my shoes and have the bike READY. Why in the world did I leave both water bottles on the bike. Next time I will bring one of my small bottles from my fuel belt. It contains enough water for such a short ride.
Bike
  • 27m 46s
  • 9.6 miles
  • 20.74 mile/hr
Comments:

Since I had not reset my bike computer I spent the first 30 seconds of the bike leg concentrating on that rather than picking up my pace. Very freaking annoying... I had no idea until I saw the turnaround point how much further I had to go.
What would you do differently?:

Reset the computer...
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Very smooth. I did not spend much time here.
What would you do differently?:

Get speed laces.
Run
  • 15m 44s
  • 2.2 miles
  • 07m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

The transition to running feel pretty good. Not as bad as I expected.
What would you do differently?:

I should have ran harder on the first lap of the second leg. I ran harder on the second loop, oh well....
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inadequate run warm-up and a poorly executed T1.

Event comments:

$25 is too much for a race like this. I did not get a water bottle as promised and they ran out of food before I got any. Also, why would you serve chips and salsa at a race?

Maybe I am sounding too negative. I did have a good time and it was fun to see some Blaze people out there. I will probably do it again next year just because it is a good way to kickoff the season.

Well, sounds like a good learning experience.  Definitely go for the speed laces - its just one less thing to worry about.  Even with being held back on the run and the bike issues you posted some fantastic times!

Very nice race! 7 minute running mile and 21mph on the bike, not all shabby for your first of the year!
