Age Group Rank = 1/15
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at a friend's house (Laura's co-worker) in Avalon. Woke up shortly after 5am ate bagel w/ pb and loaded up the car. Left at 6 and at race site by 6:30. Sign-up took 2seconds.
Event warmup:

After setting up in transition, went out for a ~14m ride and threw in a couple pickups. Then did ~1mi run w/ pickups. Forgot to take Gu prior to race.
Run
  • 13m 58s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

Mass start. Paced off the lead group for first couple tenths but the pace picked up a bit and I fell back. I didn't push to stay on as I had planned on running my race.

Felt good on the run. Course was a bit longer than 2.0mi according to Laura's gps. Based on my HR & pace, I would agree. Actual pace was prob around 6:40.

Avg HR 168
Max HR 171
What would you do differently?:

In hindsight, prob coulda pushed a bit harder.
Transition 1
  • 00m 37s
Comments:

Got into T1 and noticed my bike was knocked down, helmet was under Laura's bike and lost some of my Gu2o onto Laura's bike shoes (sorry!). I had racked my bike leaning against the legs of the rack since my seat is too high to easily rack on the nose the way I wanted it facing.

Picked up bike, put on help and took off. I had the shoes on the pedals and had them supported w/ rubber bands. I still can't do the "running jump" onto the bike. I fumbled a bit getting my feet into the shoes. Having the toe covers on didn't help. Prob cost myself 5-10s. Need to practice.

Avg HR 168
Max HR 171
OA 14/106
What would you do differently?:

Rack bike better. Practice getting into shoes more often.
Bike
  • 28m 53s
  • 10.5 miles
  • 21.81 mile/hr
Comments:

Needless to say, I took the cone turn-around quite conservatively. Minus the fumbling getting into my shoes, I raced my race. Went out comfortable for the first lap (21-22 on the straight away. Picked up effort for 2nd and 3rd laps and was holding 22-23 on straight away.

Drank ~16oz of Gu2o and took one Gu.
What would you do differently?:

In hindsight, my endurance is strong enough where I could have taken the first lap at an effort more consistent with laps 2 and 3.
Transition 2
  • 00m 21s
Comments:

Racked bike, took off helmet and put on sneakers. Pretty cool feeling running into T2 and its practically empty. That's a first for me. Reminds me of the ads in Triathlete Magazine w/ Norman Stadler's bike as the only one in T2 in Kona.

Avg HR 167
Max HR 168
OA Rank: 4/106 (I'm a T2 monster!)
What would you do differently?:

Run
  • 13m 51s
  • 2 miles
  • 06m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

Based on a quick glance at the number of bikes in T2, I thought I was in 5th place. After the first turn-around I realized I was in 6th. I raced rather defensivily...opting not to push too early to try and catch the guy in 5th and 4th (top 3 were too far ahead to be reasonable targets for me). Again just raced my race. I didn't catch them, but no one caught me.
What would you do differently?:

I probably should have worked early in the run to catch the guys in front of me. Not sure I could have, but the next guy behind me was about 1:20 back at about 0.5mi...could I really have blown up so bad that he would have caught me?
Post race
Warm down:

Drank water and walked/jogged back to see Laura on the course. After she finished, did some stretching.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overall I was happy w/ this race. First time I earned hardware.

(1) My training is endurance focused not sprint
(2) 2nd du ever
(3) For shorter races, I can be more aggressive and race against other and not just against the clock. Like bike racing, when someone makes a move, you need to answer.

Event comments:

Very good race. The post race breakfast buffet and award ceremony were indoors in two ballrooms of the convention center. Awards were presented on stage. Tons of free raffle givaways. They even had banquet staff taking away the plates and silverware. Not an everyday occurance at a multisport event!

Great race!  Congrats on the hardware!

It's hard to make that switch between "pacing" for the longer races and "racing" for the shorter ones.  Still, you seem to have done a "decent" job with it.
