Got in a swim this morning....the pool was set on the "long course" rather than short, so it was 50m across instead of the usual 25. I was amazed at how much my times slowed down without all those extra wall pushes!! I knew they would slow down some but I wasn't expecting it to be so drastic. So what is a typical change in times going from a 25 to 50m pool, or from pool to open water?

Depends on a few things - if you're OWS is in calm water and you're wearing a wetsuit, with proper training you should have a noticeable increase in speed. If it's choppy, or you don't have a wetsuit, your times could drop substantially. Personally though, I tend to be more efficient with less wall turns.

Interesting, I don't push hard off the wall.  I touch, turn around and push just enough to be flat again not enough were I can glide at all.  It's been awhile since I did flip turns but my times were generally faster when I did them.  25 yards is short enough and I didn't care for swimming 20 yards!  I'll take open water any day!

Check that when it was set up for short course, that it wasn't 25 yards, and not 25 meters.

That's a good point..when I was doing my gym tour, when we got to pool, the sales person said this is our new four lane 25 meter pool. It might be new, but its not 25 meters....lol.

I feel faster in OWS, feel like I can just go! no hindrances of walls or lane lines, but then again, I do have a tendency to meander a bit.

Are you sure your pool isn't 25 yards by 50 meters?

yes... to echo what many others have said, it seems like the "standard" indoor 50m pool these days is 50 meters by 25 yards.  Hope that makes you feel better.
