Technically, the only races that can call themselves IM or IM70.3 are the ones put on or licensed by the World Triathlon Corporation. I may be mistaken but all their races are 140.6 or 70.3. Other non-branded races may not stick to the official distance, I know I did a "HIM" last fall with a 59-mile bike, 73.3-mile total, I guess (Ironstar).

Edit: excerpt from Ironstar's website, just as an example:

The 5th Annual Iron Star Triathlon is the premier half Iron Distance triathlon in southeast Texas. Last year, we had our fourth consecutive field of over 600 competitors. Our field limit is 800. The 1.2 mile swim in Lake Conroe, the 59 mile bike in scenic Montgomery County, and the 13.1 mile run will take place at the Del Lago Resort on Lake Conroe.

Any "Ironman" or "Ironman 70.3" race put on by NASports will always be 140.6 or 70.3 miles, respectively. There are quite a few Iron distance races that aren't of the "Ironman" brand. But to the best of my knowledge, "Ironman" always means 140.6, and "half ironman" always means 70.3.

There are other distances for "long-course" tris, but an iron distance race is almost always 140.6 and a half iron distance 70.3.  At least as advertised distance.  Specific course measurements could always be off somewhat.

Ironman - 2.4 mi swim, 112 mi bike, 26.2 mi run = 140.6

Half Ironman - 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run = 70.3

Always.  What races have you seen called ironman or half ironmans that don't have these distances?

the IM brand marketers stopped calling them half ironmans and call them 70.3 races.
