THRILLED to be trying my second triathlon within a two months of doing my first one ever - in Gainesville Florida. Will look back on the days when I was considered obese, yet still made it through this experience, thanks to my coach tbctbc.
Swimming swimming swimming is the key for me. How about for you??

if I do this one, it is going to be "being able to run the second half of the run leg in soft sand".    It's a parralel to beach swim, one way.  The water is quite shallow in parts and folks were walking when I did it year before last.

Di-
Just remember, you can always breaststroke...cheer her on guys, this is going to be her first open water swim, the last one in Gainesville was in a 50m pool with a time trial start...

Lucy,
hope you can make it, I'm doing this one with Di...she came to see me do the October Moss Park one in Orlando, and now she's doing them too, which is very cool

Has anyone done it before, sounds pretty big for a sprint, and if it has been around for so long, I'm hoping that it is very well organized...here's to another salt water swim...hope that St. A's goes better than my last salt water swim!

I've done it once, it's put on by the Mad Dogs Tri Club in ST Pete.  It was pretty cool, the bike course was fun, my first "real" downhill on a bridge.   The swim starts out, and the bike's around town, over a few bridges/overpasses.   The run is out on a road and back on the beach.  The year I did it the tide was funky, and so we only had soft sand to run on.    I think it was Renee's first tri!

It's a popular race.  yeah.  A coupla other BTers are doing this one I believe.  I haven't signed up...

I'm doing Mad Beach too!  I did the race last year, and though it wasn't my best time, I think out of the 15 races I did last year, this one was top 3 in enjoyment.  You'll have a blast!

If you need any pointers on race site stuff, just ask!  They have a great expo there...bring your checkbook!! LOL

Awesome!! The best races are the ones that I can spend the most money at, HAA!!

See you all there...now, this bridge thing...does this involve going UP - like a hill??
Also, how is the water...this will be my friend's first open water swim, so I'm a bit nervous for her...

I see two bridges that I remember.   Shouldn't be bad, it's not like it's the bridge over Lake Ponchartrain or something (that gives me nightmares....), or the Skyway... (I go out of my way to aviod it).

Morton Plant Mease has three different bridges!  Including the new clearwater bridge!  For IM 70.3, they went over that twice on the bike and four times on the run....  so I went over it four tmies on my mountain bike....  wasn't too bad but down was fun.

The bridges ARE fun going down!!   Not much to deal with though, they're not huge like the bridges in Clearwater. The rest of the course is good though, I had my first ever 22mph average in that race last year, and that was a rather slow bike split as far as the overall race...for me it was awesome.

The water is easy.  Usually warm, and last year it was totally flat, like a long swimming pool.  Check out my race report and you'll see...

This race DID happen a month later last year so you may find a few differences, but I'd venture to say nothing super.

Gonna bump this thread back up there, am much more psyched for this race after a fun St. A's...previous to that, I was less than thrilled...

If you are doing this one, check in...maybe we can organize something for Saturday night to hang out, seems to be a decent number of people doing it...

Three weeks and counting

I have to change my plans.  I have decided to go over to the FL 70.3 race in Orlando that day because I'm gonna be doing that race next year.  I'm gonna do the Crystal River sprint the week after Mad Beach instead.  But I will be at Mad Beach on Saturday to watch Terri (BunnyRunner) do the Mad Beach Mini.  So if anyone's out there on that day, come help me give her some encouragement!

I did the run last year as part of a relay. It is exactly as described, out on the road, back on the beach. Its hard for me to judge distance and when to kick it when the finish is straight in front of me. I would do the race this year but I am not quite up to swimming a half mile. I dont know the last time I went in the water with swimming as my purpose. I am wanting to do a Ft. Desoto tri later this year, and then St. Anthony's next year (this year I just did the bike as part of a relay).

Last year I also did the Sand Key and Escape to Siesta sprint tri's, and the Safety Harbor Duathlon.

This is always a GREAT race.  Good course, usually pretty hot out, and the sand run is very challenging.

The only problem is on the bridge that they will sometimes make you dismount and run your bike across the span of the drawbridge....that only will cost you a little time though on an otherwise fast bike course.

The swim is always set up to go with the current, so if the current is strong, it is a great race to PR on the swim.

Yeah that bridge "run" with the bike was stoooopid.  But they did say it was only for that year because there was construction on the bridge.  They said this year it won't be like that...we'll see!!!

I am excited for this race.  A whole bunch of people I know are doing it.

The key to the beach run is to run as close to the water as possible because it is hard.

After I was done last year I saw people running down the middle of the beach in the loose sand.

If anyone has a BT banner, we could all share a refreshing adult beverage or three after the race.  I will be doing a few shorter rides on the suncoast between now and the race, so if anyone else wants to get out there, let me know.

Come out Saturday and meet the famous TRIXIE!

Hey all.  Hope everyone has a great time at the race this weekend.  Just as a heads up, if you wanna see something funny, come out on Saturday for the Mad Beach Mini.

You will get to see me and the world famous TRIXIE tear it up in a supersprint.  Plus, you can give BunnyRunner your support as well...Terri doesn't get along well with open water, so seeing her race a tri (usually she's a du girl) is a rare thing...so come out and cheer her on!  Plus you'll get to see me and Trix make fools of ourselves.  I'll be wearing a camo swimsuit.

I'm sure they still do.  It never gets filled.  Give them a call, I'm sure there's a contact number on the website.  I'll bet you can probably sign up in the morning too.  I think there is day-of-race registration.

Was wondering if anyone knows if wetsuits are going to be allowed for the sprint on sunday. I am looking at the age group under 84 degree cutoff since i don't plan on being eligible for any awards, so far i have seen 78,82, and 85 so they all over the place.

Have an injury that hurts a lot swimming, so was looking for the extra bouyancy and maybe a little less effort to try and not strain it to much during the swim part. Any little bit may help.
