I'm going to try running with the mp3 player, and finally purchased a Zen. But the earbuds that come with it are too big and hurt my ears. Not to mention they are going to fall out at the first uneven step.

Anybody found some that work?

BTW Ran 3 miles today for only the 2nd time ever! Took 3 years to get to 3 miles.

I own these and so far to date they are my favorite. They run $100 but well worth the money. Also come with three different size ear buds to fit to your ear.

I have these, and they are awesome. http://www.earphonesolutions.com/westoneum1.html I tried about 4 completely different earphones before these and they all sucked. Unlike the bose, there is only one size...thats because they are foam tipped and will absolutely fit your ears. Only badside is they effectively block all outside noise. If you have large ears, google "accordian earphones", they sound great and would work well with ears larger than mine.

Alternatively, you can try this: pick up a cheap pair of earphones, and a pack of foam earplugs. Wallyworld has both of these. Poke a somewhat clean hole through the foam; a drill with a tiny bit should work. Attach the earphones to the foam with some hotglue or whatever. It will set you back around $5. These will stay in your ears like a charm, as long as your glueing is done properly.

Seems like a pain, but you can make el cheapo earphones for a couple bucks that work similar to $100+ models (less dbs and clarity though).

Btw, congrats on the 3m. Keep going at it a while then try raising it again

I'm pretty happy with the Creatives I got after Christmas this year:

Good at blocking out ambient sound (great at the gym) and fit superbly.  Cheap, too.  I think paid $20 CAD.

Blue tooth stereo headset. They are a little heavy but having no wires is a god sent.

These work geat from Borders bookshops.

 http://www.amazon.com/Koss-The-Plug-Portable-Headphones/dp/B00001P4XA/ref=pd_bbs_8/002-4170587-5441662?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1177245129&sr=8-8

They are made by Koss and only cost $14, I view ear buds as being disposable and can't afford to be throwing away over $100 a pop.

First off, congrats on breaking the 3 mile barrier - the next hurdle will take less time.

No specific recommendations on what to use, but a couple of suggestions on when/how to use them:

1) if you're running on a road that has vehicle traffic, leave one out of one ear (on the traffic side), so that you can hear anything approaching from behind.

2) beware the psychological advantage to running with music. Depending on the tunes you pick, you may end up running faster with than without. Then, come your next triathlon, when you can't wear them, your performance may be poorer. So, make sure you do at least some of your training runs without music, so that the mind has to create its own running tempo, instead of just following along to the beat.

Have fun, be careful...

I am a little surprised nobody has said this yet...

None.

Run without music and take the time to spend a little quality time insidee yourself. Don't use the distraction, but instead focus on what you are feeling and what your body is telling you. Listen to your own thoughts and work out mentally some of the challenges that you are facing currently.

Training with headphones is not bad, but think of training without them as better -- taking your mental training (which is important as well) to another level.

All great suggestions, thanks! Yes, I realized I am hoping for the psychological effect of being able to run better with them in. As Peanut pointed out this could become a crutch that isn't available during races -- good point that I had forgotten. I will make sure I run without them at times too.

We're off to church, think anyone would notice if I wore the earbuds there??
