Total Time = 1h 34m 42s
Overall Rank = 114/500
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 4/18
Pre-race routine:

Wake up at 6:00. Granola bar with peanut butter for breakfast and water. Go to race location and set up transition area. No warmup or stretching. I'm going to kill myself if I don't learn to do that.
Event warmup:

none
Swim
  • 06m 3s
  • 440 yards
  • 01m 23s / 100 yards
Comments:

Waves and current were huge. It was tough getting out to the first bouy, but once you got there, you could just let the current take you and you'd hit the second bouy. The waves also helped coming back into shore. There was about 100 yards between the swim exit and T1.
What would you do differently?:

Start farther up the beach so I'm not fighting the current to get to the first bouy. Also learn to swim with large waves like the ones we had that day.
Transition 1
  • 04m 40s
Comments:

Slow T1 time. Still trying to deal with the whole first tri gitters. Extra thorough to make sure I had everything. Had no problems getting out of the wetsuit. It was borderline if I even needed it. That would also cut down on the transition time. Need to pick up the pace here in this area. If I could cut this T1 time down, I can easily cut a lot of time off my total time.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace. And learn to ride and run barefoot.
Bike
  • 51m 20s
  • 17.2 miles
  • 20.10 mile/hr
Comments:

Very fast outbound leg. Had a nice tailwind on this leg. Averaged 24.7 mph out and 14.7 back. Need to get a spare inertube just in case. The patch kit that I have would requie a workable pump instead of those CO2 things. Although I didn't need it, I could have easily been one of the unlucky ones with a flat on this course.
What would you do differently?:

Have a spare tube with me and try to have the headwind affect me less. Although I don't know exactly how to work that.
Transition 2
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Very Fast T2 time. I'm pleased with how this turned out. Had problems with one shoe that woudln't come unclipped from the bike, so I just took the shoe off there and left it on the bike. Lock laces work like a charm. Definately helps the transiition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 31m 28s
  • 4 miles
  • 07m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Brick workouts saved my ass here. Some people were struggling with the whole bike to run transition. I had no problems at all. And I still maintained my 8 min pace. This has got to get faster.
Post race
Warm down:

welked around and drank water

What limited your ability to perform faster:

first tri jiggers, uncertainty about how I will react to the whole event, and starting training 5 weeks before race day.

Nate,

Great race and congrats on becoming a triathlete. You will get the transitions down with experience. Sorry I didn't get to meet you. Hope you will look into doing the next race in Gulf Shores on May 6th and the Grandman in Fairhope in June.

I would really love to be there for those races, but I'm moving to Texas on Apr 25.  I'm  sure I'll be back at some point to race again.
