Pre-race routine:

Mullet Man is always a big event for us. We had the house full of guest from Louisiana and Fairhope. Went to packet pick up as a group Friday night then back for prerace dinner. Marcy prepared the standard pasta and chicken and fed 7 of us. We then went out to the garage and got the bikes ready and then came in and packed up bags and worked the checklist. Slept well, cough finally stopped and slept till the alarm went off.

Got to race and parking was a little pain but not bad. Saw fellow BT's, Brandy, Matt, and John before the race. Argued with the gang about wetsuits and helped fix a friends mtn bike then off to the swim. Frank and I went without the wetsuits, everybody else in the group wore them.
Event warmup:

Walked in the cold water and peed.
Swim
  • 06m 31s
  • 400 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in the sixth wave and we were swimming left to right. I noticed that in the first 2 waves the swimmers were getting sucked to the wrong side of the buoy. I adjusted my start position about 30 feet to the right of the buoy and nailed it, turning precisely on the buoy without having to adjust at all. On the across portion, I had a hard time siting the second buoy. Are wave had orange swim caps and the buoy was orange. I just tried to stay in the middle of the group but swam a little further out than I needed. I corrected well and turned right on the buoy. Swam in and got drug 40 feet to the right of the swim exit. Ran back to the exit and into transition. There were some big waves but it was an easy swim. Glad I skipped the wetsuit. Similiar placing to last year.
What would you do differently?:

Tell the race organizers not to use orange swim caps with orange turn buoys. I have had this happen in both orange and yellow caps and it always makes it more interesting.
Transition 1
  • 01m 42s
Comments:

Ran to bike and didn't get all the rocks off my feet. Had a pebble in one shoe but decided to tough it out. No real issues.
What would you do differently?:

clean my feet b4 putting on shoes and probably run a little harder in and out. I was rusty on transitions
Bike
  • 47m 48s
  • 17.1 miles
  • 21.46 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was supposed to shortened by a mile, but it was the same course as last year. My time was 29 seconds slowwer than last year, but I can't complain as bike training less than 50% of what I was doing at this time last year. I passed 107 bikes on the course and was only passed by 3 bikers. That part was alot of fun. I averaged 25.7 on the way out and 18.6 on the way home. My placing on the bike dropped from top a good bit from last year. I drank aero bottle full of water and a half bottle of gatorade endurance, no gels necessary for this race.
What would you do differently?:

I rode a good race, I probably could have pushed harder with the tail wind but I raced above where I had planned. I just need to get my training back on track. I am going to experiment with the road bike some more, but the engine was what made the difference today.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

slipped feet out of pedals a little early but no real issues. I ran without socks and without my ankle braces. First run since last June without the ankle braces. I was a little concerned but it held up fine.
Run
  • 35m 57s
  • 4 miles
  • 08m 59s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran a solid race, 2 minutes and 20 seconds faster than last year and my fastest in the 5 mullet mans I have done. I have trained many miles on this course and I was worried about coming back into the headwind. No issues and I was actually stronger on the way back yesterday. Ankle was sore at the end but no worse than normal. Significant improvement in both my AG and overall on the run. Made up for the slower bike.
Post race
Warm down:

No warm down, went back to watch others finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of bike training hurt a little, otherwise a very good race for me. I was 7 minutes faster than last year. The swim was way easy compared to last year, but I still had almost a 2 mimute improvement on the run/bike combined.

Event comments:

Great race, lots of fun with good friends. The girls all rocked, Lindsay was 6th overall female and won her age group. Marcy won her age group, and Susan was Grandmaster Female winner. Hungout with friends till 1 oclock.

You probably won't believe this, but the mullet in mullet man is a fish, as opposed to the hair do!

yep, mullet. Biloxi Bacon.  My grandpa taught me how to throw a cast net (not those new fangled types you see today, but the big green heavy ones). He made me my own, I still have.    Taste lovely fried or smoked.

one day I"ll do this thing!!

Ken....great race!

Nice bike speed but awesome improvement on the run...excellant!

You are fortunate to have a great bunch of folks to train with including your wife. Nice how well all the women did at the race.

So you lost a little on the bike !  not a problem when you run like that.

Maybe you only did half the training on the bike compared to last year, but you still absolutely smoked the bike Great race, and very smart adjusting your swim start, simply brilliant
