Playtri
68F / 20C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 22m 20s
Overall Rank = 149/288
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 18/27
Pre-race routine:

Nothing special ate normal breakfast of oatmeal and banana, drank some Gatorade.
Event warmup:

My heart was racing pretty good by itself, so only did a little stretching.
Swim
  • 15m 57s
  • 547 yards
  • 02m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first Tri and very first OWS and it showed. Not being able to see where I was going bothered me, plus the traffic got to me as well. I got a little panicky not being able to see, then with all the other swimmers knocking into me, I started to breath heavy, this made me even more panicky. It took 3/4 of the course to settle down. Good thing the water was cold, otherwise i would not have had a wet suit, the wet suit really helped keep me up. I am really disappointed in my swim, in the pool I have roughly 2min 100m pace, I knew I would be slower in the open water just didnt think I would struggle as much as I did.

What would you do differently?:

I will be adding as much open water, lake swimming as I can to my work outs.

My next event has an 800 meter swim (no wet suits)
Transition 1
  • 03m 35s
Comments:

Was a little more winded then I expected I would be so T1 took a little longer than I thought it would. Think if I had not had such a bad time on the swim, I would have done better in T1, I was still a little shell shocked from the swim.
Bike
  • 36m 44s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.33 mile/hr
Comments:

Did pretty much as I expected in the bike, the course was pretty short and relatively flat. I didn't have any equipment issues, so all and all the bike was pretty good. Had a goal of 16.5 mph for the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe push a little harder at the beginning.
Transition 2
  • 01m 7s
Comments:

I felt a lot better in T2 having gotten over the disappointment of the horrible swim.
Run
  • 24m 54s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt better the 2nd half of the course, and was able to pick up the pace a little. My goal for the run was to hit 8 minute miles so I did pretty good here.
Post race
Warm down:

Went home and mowed the yard.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Panic in the swim. My goal was to finish in 1:15 so I was a little more than 7 minutes off, almost all of it can be attributed to my bad swim and its affects on me in T1.

Event comments:

This was my first race so don't have anything to compare it will but overall it seemed very well organized. I plan doing 2 more Playtri events this summer.

Great first race!!  It's hard to psychologically get past a bad leg, but you did it!  You came back with a very solid run.  Congrats, triathlete!

Great Job,, It seems that everyone had some difficulity with the swim, add in it being your first tri & open water swim, it seems like you recovered great from the swim.

Congrats on your first!  You did very well, and it will only get better with experience.

And you still had the energy to go home and mow the lawn.  Maybe you should've signed up for the olympic!

Did I forget to mention you should probably try swim in open water before your event?  :0
